  1. And it doesn't even clear 70% of GUTS!

  2. Anyways, Olivia is definitely bigger, but yeah, they're in different lanes

Forgive me. What does Driver’s License have to do with Sabrina?

The dude it's about reportedly dated Sabrina after Olivia, and she's supposedly referenced in it

"Driver's License" was a full-on cultural phenomenon, which probably benefitted from the fact that it seemed to come out of nowhere. "Espresso" was big, but it was more of a summer-long slow burn. Still weird that "Espresso" never hit number 1, though. A combination of them (maybe?) going too early with "Please Please Please" as the follow-up and the shocking durability of that Shaboozey song on the charts last year.

i think I remember hearing ~about~ driver's license, looking it up on youtube and seeing it had like 130 million views or something and was surprised I had somehow avoided hearing it up to that point

I don't think it can be overstated how big that song got on TikTok pretty much overnight, or how much that fueled its broader success.

My only experience of Drivers License before GUTS made me a fan was the Todd In The Shadows video about it. Assumed i'd never hear it again. Nope.

I remember seeing legit tv commercials featuring drivers license. It might have been been a commercial for TikTok. I had never heard of her but kept seeing commercials with the song. Eventually ended up listening to it and liked it.

and good 4 u was huge too, like heard that song everywhere for a while

Hearing “good 4 u” and “driver’s license” on the radio while borrowing my parents’ old car without a CD player is how I became an Olivia Rodrigo fan.

Hearing that “I’m working late ‘cause I’m a singer” part of “Espresso” on random TikToks when I started using that app is how I became a Sabrina Carpenter fan.

Women who make great pop music full of both great craft and distinct personalities sure are delightful, huh.

Yeah, “Driver’s License” was a rare debut single that was a hit from day one. Like, I remember the day it came out, people were going nuts for it (probably also had to do with it being COVID and Olivia teeing it up really well) and I really didn’t get it at the time. But it was a smash right out of the gate.

I think their previous time as Disney stars definitely helped their appeal initially, but have both gone in their own different paths and both releasing really fucking good music.

Sabrina Carpenter releasing like five albums before her breakthrough is also an interesting part of this story. Olivia arrived seemingly fully formed and it took Sabrina a minute to find her thing.

And of course, kudos to our scene in both cases with Jack Antonoff and Dan Nigro
