Haven't listened to Manchild yet, but there are songs on her last one that I probably wouldn't have liked on their own but I do in the context of the album, so i'll wait for the album before I listen to it.

Oh and the pearl clutching is predictable and also hilarious. Girl knows what she's doing and the conservatives are playing right into her hands. Good shit IMO.

I'm indifferent to the art. I don't love it myself but there's a ton of albums I don't love the art for. Sexualized popstar is nothing new and we've seen it a million times. I also don't think it's feminist or empowering like I've seen stans try to say, but I also don't think Sabrina herself has said that. I don't have any issues with women owning their sexuality and centering their pleasure but I also find it a bit boring sometimes because it almost always still revolves around the male gaze. I'm sure they knew the art would cause discourse and I doubt they care

Olivia’s isn’t even sexual is it?? Like that is pretty obviously her “puking her *guts* out” with someone holding her hair back.

Has this world stopped asking what it's thinking?

Manchild is super fun. Production is very The 1975 thanks to the Jack connection.

Is there an alternate timeline where Olivia Rodrigo never writes Drivers License, and Sabrina Carpenter doesn’t become one of the biggest pop stars in the world?

Not to pit them against each other, but have we reached the point where Sabrina is “more famous”? Just a meteoric rise for two very talented people whose careers (I think, anyway) will always be intertwined.

I never really attributed Sabrina’s success to “Driver’s License,” especially because Sabrina’s response song was kind of ass and wasn’t a huge hit or anything. But also now, they’re just in two very different lanes in pop.

Sabrina and Chappell have so much personality I can't imagine them not making it, she still would have written Espresso

It's not really possible to compare which is more famous. Sabrina is currently because she's been in cycle with new music and Olivia is just chilling. That being said, Olivia's streaming numbers are insane and she towers over in that regard. Different kinds of fame levels

Only anecdotal evidence I have is that it wasn’t that difficult to secure Sabrina tickets but it was completely impossible for me to get them for Olivia

I get the sense that there are more die-hard Olivia stans, but I don't really have any empirical data to back that up.

I had to double check, because I thought Manchild was her third #1, which would have matched her with Olivia - BUT, in what is destined to be a piece of musical trivia, Espresso only peaked at #3. While Olivia’s streams are huge, Sabrina is up to something like 75 million monthly listeners, so I think that gap will narrow soon enough.

The co-sign from Taylor on the Era’s Tour was probably a significant factor in this run she has had, and I am sure she took some good advice over all those shows.

Just a really cool story of seizing your moment.

Yeah, "Please Please Please" being the number 1 from the last album is still wild.

Wow I find that mind blowing, both the streaming comparisons and that espresso wasn’t bigger than ppp.

I’m not privy to streaming numbers, nor do I follow pop news closely, and my opinion doesn’t mean anything, but espresso-era sabrina felt way bigger to me than Olivia at any given point in her tenure, who to be fair did feel massive. Espresso felt like a cultural seasonal moment that was all over social media, that came right after feather, and that is already in another era (longevity!). my lasting memory of Olivia is seeing drivers license on YouTube a lot and all the comparisons of that one chorus to paramore lol. I don’t mean to be dismissive, but that’s what my mind remembers; I guess it corroborates the above. As does the fact that I too had an easy time getting an affordable Sabrina pit ticket, albeit in montreal.

It's hard to truly explain how huge drivers licence was, an absolute genre defining song of a generation. Not my generation, but for her generation it's unmatched

"Drivers License" broke a string of records, including the Spotify record for the most single-day streams for a non-holiday song (achieved on its fourth day of release) and the biggest first-week for a song on Spotify and Amazon Music. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and made Rodrigo the youngest artist ever to debut atop the chart. The song spent eight consecutive weeks at number one. It has been certified six-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Elsewhere, "Drivers License" reached number one in 25 countries, as well as spending multiple weeks atop the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. It also peaked within the top ten in Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa and various others. As of November 2024, the song has over 2.31 billion streams on Spotify,[1] ranking amongst the 100 most streamed songs on the platform.
