popcorn ceiling texture is typically made from a latex-based paint mixed with additives of various consistencies, typically silica sand or Styrofoam. Asbestos was a common additive pre-1978 when the material was banned in the US. Popcorn ceiling styles can range from a fine sand-like texture to a Venetian-style texture to a course "popcorn" looking texture. Finer finishes can be applied with a 1/4-3/8" nap roller (foam rollers are recommended for finer textures). Heavier texture should be applied with a 1/2-1" nap natural fiber roller or loop-texture roller. Heaviest finishes should be applied with a paint sprayer. These types of paint products are used for both wall and ceiling decorative finishes.
