Was it a North American Grey?? That's surprising because i'm pretty sure they top out at around 28mph. They can also fit on average of 6 nuts in their mouths at once, but that's neither here nor there.

It's certainly not the California Ground Squirrel, which is found from central Washington through western Oregon, California and into the northern part of Baja California. The squirrel is found in plains, small meadows, tree-covered hillsides, rocky outcrops, and granite taluses. The northern extent of its range was once bounded by the Columbia River, but the California Ground Squirrel has crossed the river into south-central Washington.

 

In MS/HS we went on vacation to a nature preserve/zoo thing and the squirrels would come so close to us that you could get them.

Were they really obese? I remember going to Pebble Beach and seeing the fattest California Ground Squirrels I've ever seen. They lived to be fed by people.
