I tend to ignore a lot of the micro wineries, so I think you're right in that there are egregious trends which I just tend to overlook.

We'll agree to disagree on the over-hopping, I think that's just a matter of preference. It's not to say I don't love hops, but I think some beers are just straight up hop-forward and I find that kind of boring. Although I must profess ignorance as I certainly don't have the knowledge that you do.

I agree with you 100% on beer in America not being limited by traditions. You really make a great point about the lack of tradition and the youth of our beer industry. I think that's great. It's sort of like how Naples, Italy has set standards for their pizza--while their pizza is absolutely excellent, I think we make it better here in America. That said, I love both the experimental side of beer in America and the traditional beer we find coming from Europe and other areas of the world. Wine, yes it's not limited by tradition, but tradition in wine making has resulted in tremendously excellent output from age-old European wineries. The French are masters at pinot noir and I'll take a French burgundy over pretty much any other wine. I do love American wine (Au Bon Climat, Duckhorn, Domaine Drouhin, etc) but some of those wines are just utterly impeccable.

Could you go into a bit more depth about the laws regarding whiskey? I'm ignorant. Bourbon is my preferred brown liquor although I have a soft spot for certain Japanese and Scottish whiskeys.

Speakin' my language with the American wine you listed! Love it. Going wine tasting through Europe is on my bucket list (and probably something I'll never be able to do) for sure. Good analogy with the pizza. Much in the way that I want to go to Belgium and have traditional Lambic beers, I want to go to France and have Burgundy and Champagne. You ever watch the movies Somm? There are two of them on Netflix and very interesting. The second one is more about wine in general and I watch it probably once a year. The first just follows five guys going for their Master Somm certification and it's fascinating. I have a buddy in the industry here that just passed his Certified Somm level. His work (a really nice wine bar/restaurant) does blind wine tastings but they do them on Monday afternoons so I've never been able to attend. I want to sit in on one so bad. His restaurant is partially owned by like an Advanced Somm (step below Master, I believe. Might be mistaken and there's another level between Advanced and Master but I can't remember).

I'd be doing a disservice with regards to whiskey laws. It's just a lot of things like what can and cannot be called bourbon and whatnot. I'm just dipping my toes into whiskey research so I can start to take advantage of a bar that does 33% off whiskey on wednesdays here in town with a pretty solid list.

Yep! At work we've been developing a mesquite smoked scotch ale for a local BBQ place that's 1 block from the brewery and that's been a lot of fun to continually tweak the recipe and the massive mesquite smoke brings a whole new element to things.
Agreed. They sell those 15 packs of Dirty Bastard and Founders openly calls them Idiot Boxes haha.
Best BA beer you've had since moving to Denver? I just had a whole 22 oz bomber of Deschutes The Abyss (2016 vintage) to celebrate my birthday last night.
