I agree on nearly 100% of what you said. I love beer more, find wine more interesting thought. That’s because my wine knowledge is where my beer knowledge was 4 years ago.

I would argue that wine is equally oversaturated, at least here in Michigan. Every Michigan winery is doing the same thing over and over and it sucks. But yes, I agree on what you said for sure. The egregious trend in wine however is making vanilla bombs of wine from the barrel aging and using that to cover up the flaws of the wine and still be sellable.

I disagree on the over hopping of American beers; it, to me, is what is driving beer innovation forward because hope, in the whole scheme of the beer industry, are very young ingredients. Well, farmed, American style hops, I should say. They’ve been around since like the 70s so we’re still trying to figure out their capabilities to an extent. With the trend of NEIPA’s and overhopped beers, what we’re figuring out is that there’s way more applications and things we can do with them. We can make a desert hoppy beer with certain hop varietals used in certain ways, which is something we didn’t even consider as an industry 5 years ago, let alone 40.

What I love about both beer and wine is that in America we aren’t bound by traditions. I love Belgian and German beers because they’re so well executed, but they’re also beholden to traditions (German beer, by law) that I wish they were able to step outside the boundaries more. The only ones that do are lambic breweries in Belgium.

Here, our wine industry is so young (less than 100 years old at this point) we get to do whatever we want. Same with beer. We don’t have the German purity laws; we don’t have the hundreds of years of Belgian tradition that have forced the market into a certain taste profile. We get to make lambic inspired beers, over hopped ipa, big burly desert stouts, sours/kettle sours, cream ales, etc.

I wish American law’s regarding whiskey weren’t so restrictive comparatively.
