I find good wine to be one of the most delightful things in all of life. I still know basically nothing about it despite reading a few books. I love beer. I love the varieties and the complexities and nuances you can find in them. Wine is very similar in a lot of ways. I tend to think of wine as the more complex beverage specifically because of the differences one can find between vineyards and varieties of grapes as they are more subtle and nuanced, and while picking up on those differences can be a challenge, I find it more rewarding. I think that those complexities speak to the skill of winemakers and therefore trying to figure out what a given winery experienced that year in terms of weather, their soil, etc. is just really fascinating on a different level to me. I'd love to become as knowledgeable as a sommelier, but it'll never happen. I don't have the time or resources or probably the palate for it. I also tend to think of the beer market as over-saturated right now and that partially lessens the appeal for me. Not to say there isn't bad wine, but it's less in your face which I find appealing and I don't find egregious trends in wine such as the over-hopping of a lot of American beers (again, not to say that there aren't a fuckton of fantastic beers out there).

But like you said, there's a right time for the right beverage. I'm not ordering wine at a 76ers game. I'm not drinking beer when I'm eating a meal at a sophisticated restaurant. Then again, I'm always down for a martini haha.

I agree with this. I have to amend my statement to say that I don't like most beers. Darker, sweeter beers are the only ones I can really tolerate. But I'll choose to drink wine over those any day.
