I only know Screaming Infidelities, Dammit, Helena, and Teenage Dirtbag I'm sure this will be enjoyable though
probably not the place to say this, but the EP isn't very good. He did the exact same arrangement on every song, just slows it down and does moody vocals. Granted I'm not a fan of his solo stuff in the first place, but I was hoping the EP would do some cool things with the songs
Yeah, I'm with you. It's a lot of the same stuff...plus literally the same song twice, not even at opposite ends of the track list. Plus we'd heard more than half of the songs before its release. I am curious what you mean about not being a fan of his solo stuff...what else does he have?
Ruston Kelly is great. This EP is a fun little thing. Probably shouldn’t be analyzed for more than what it is, lol.
Yeah, he said he wanted the covers to feel like the listener was sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of him while he performs. It was never supposed to be some experimental thing, it's just for fun.
I like the general concept of how emo songs work in the folk tradition, reminded me of this which is one of the best covers
I agree. I kinda like Teenage Dirtbag, but that’s it. I am a fan of hin though. I love his last album.
Just listened to the EP and it's pretty good even though I only knew a couple of the songs Teenage Dirtbag is a bad song and I wish it wasn't on there twice haha
Teenage Dirtbag is a great song, but I also wish it wasn’t on there twice. The live version is quite a bit better than the studio recording, I think.
I also like Ruston a lot, have met him, got a signed set list, have tickets to see him in 2 weeks...but don't feel the need to be defensive when people criticize a sub-par release. I know it's not meant to be a masterpiece or anything, but just because it's a covers album from an artist we love doesn't make it immune.
It's not like I'm being aggressively critical or anything, I just said I don't like it and he basically performs each cover the same way. Sue me.
