I didn't take a ton of days off in 2022, but the ones I did take off I really needed, haha. Could not have run the day after my marathon, no matter the motivation.
@Fixed Glitch do you have a minimum distance for each day to keep the streak going? I know some people who kept a streak at times but only counted a day or it was a mile or more and other counted anything 10+ minutes in their streak and some that did half a mile a day minimum. I know for me, oddly enough, the days I dislike the most sometimes are the training plan days that are 2-3 miles. Sometimes those feel like they take forever because I know I’m “only” running 2 miles and think it should go quicker and not worth changing into my gear for, etc.
I do have a minimum distance of a 5K. For the first 500 days I averaged a 10K and had weekly goals too. Was at 40 miles+ for the first 365 days and then I scaled it down gradually. I’m at about 25-30 miles per week now. I used to feel the same way about the short distance runs, but now I actually enjoy them. The big change for me was that I did not do any races in 2022 after averaging about 8-10 races per year for my running career. I miss them, but realistically I felt the need to choose between races and the streak. most of the people I know doing streaks allow for the one mile minimum which is approved by the official run streak organization. For me, that is something I have reserved for an emergency. Hoping it doesn’t happen though and that I can keep the 5K minimum going.
man, pre covid i was doing a minimum of 6 miles a day, usually 7-8 with relative ease. just hacked my way through a 6 mile run that was one of the hardest runs i've done in recent memory. my lungs are fucked.
I used to start my day with running. However, these holidays were so lazy.... Haven't run for a month for sure. I try to walk more. Also found a great way out to exercise like this when just walking upstairs no matter where.
Today was one of those runs where everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Too many layers. Overheated. Cramps. Muscle tightness. Nausea. Heart rate too high. But I finished. Blah. This is why you train to avoid this on race day. Phew.
gimme a long sleeve athletic, gloves and some vaseline for the jewels and i can run in anything that's not sub 15degrees
im a baby. anything under 50 im almost out. but i also rarely run when its THAT cold being in San Diego. Now heat I can go on about.
I run in some pretty brutal temperatures. About to head out now and it’s 28 degrees. The toughest days are the cold rainy days. That makes for some painful running. running in Reno means going through it all too I definitely prefer the summer and the longer days. But there is something I enjoy about each season. Missing my trails right now as they are currently a muddy mess.
I used to hate running in the winter, but training for a marathon last year through mostly winter weather made me appreciate the benefits (not soaked in sweat a few miles into a long run, I don’t get dehydrated as fast, workouts are way less taxing, there’s generally less going on so I have more time to fit in runs, etc.) Buying a bunch of great Tracksmith and Janji clothes for winter running didn’t hurt.
Ran my first race in awhile last weekend, a five-miler. Won it in a 27:30. Made me feel pretty good about where I am heading into another marathon training cycle.
I will say though you quickly realize you don't really need a bunch of special clothes to run in cold temps. Purchasing a solid pair of gloves was key for me.
I sweat as much in the 30s as I do in the 90s. It’s disgusting, really. I use hot hands on any run longer than 4 if it’s too cold. I’m a wuss.
this is me. i'll go out and do 6-8 miles in mid 20's and still come back with half my shirt drenched in sweat. if i don't wear a hat, it's usually my full shirt. it's embarrassing
I really don't have a huge problem running in the current temps here in Boston - generally been 30-35 most days. For me, it works out something like the following: any temp: tshirt, shorts, compression shorts drops to low 50s: consider long sleeves High 40s: add beanie 45-35: add sweatshirt under 35: add gloves under 20: add sweatpants Generally I'm not horribly uncomfy til 25 or lower, but it goes from fine to awful real quick somewhere in the low 20s
I will basically almost always run in shorts as my legs never feel cold and if I have a hat and gloves (and a buff for my face if needed) that can carry me through most Wisconsin winter weather days. Eventually I’ll put on leggings but usually it’s leggings, shorts, short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt, hat, gloves and buff at my most extreme but luckily those type of dress days are few and far between. Oh, and sunglasses. Sunglasses for every run. First two years I ran I never wore sunglasses and if my vision wasn’t shit enough, that certainly did the trick
This is my first winter not wearing leggings or tights of any kind. They really aren’t necessary. I do have a hat that covers my ears that makes a big difference for the extra cold situations. It’s probably my oldest piece of gear.
I’m starting to see some serious speed gains out of nowhere. I’m lifting a bit more regularly than I used to, but it’s kinda wild to see my training pace drop to my old race pace. Still slower than most of y’all, but hey. I’ll take it
Another week of a continued speed gain for me. Really cool. Maybe gonna get a sub-2 on a course that destroyed me last year in 8 weeks.
So I think I’ve been planting on my right foot weird lately because this recently happened to my shoe, I don’t have any discomfort in my feet afterwards but I’ll still probably get some wides.
