I will let you know how the course is. Right now looks like it will be rainy because of tropical rainstorm Nicole, but I’d rather that than hot or freezing cold. Sorry to hear about your injury too! I have chronic ankle issues from post-traumatic arthritis after a car accident almost 21 years ago. I probably shouldn’t run at all, at least not marathon distances, and I have only about 60% mobility in that ankle so it keeps my speed relatively slow. It’s been flaring up a bit more than usual the past few weeks but usually gets better within the first mile of a run. I’ve been self treating it with stretching, massage, and arnica gel and found that shoes with a meta rocker help a lot. I tried some Vaporflys but my ankle cannot handle those. I will probably take the rest of the year off from running after the marathon and then see how things go.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/well...fXjpNZ6G6uny9271obJKz_wCVLvV91W92gMroNTh-4N74 Ouch. My marathon was .4 miles too long by my running app.
The fact that the change was by less than 1,000 feet so they’re not counting it. IT’S 100 FUCKING MILES, way to be nitpicky lol All of my races have been over the 26.2 or 13.1 mark on all my devices. Which makes sense since the official marking:tracking is usually the absolute shortest distance / the middle of the route the entire way whereas actual people don’t run that exact line / get more from zigzagging around people, etc.
as I attempt a run for the first time in two weeks of course I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of wanting to do way too much next year without even knowing if I can stay healthy lol. Here’s the 2023 plan as of today. Feb - Austin, TX marathon May - Providence, RI marathon June - Grandma’s Marathon (Duluth, MN) Sep/Oct/Nov - 50K? 50-miler? 2024 Q1/Q2 - 50-miler Q3/Q4 - 50-miler or 100-miler 2025 100-miler 2026 register for Big Foot 200 lottery or something ridiculous if the world hasn’t ended by then
I’ve got an April 2 half here in Knoxville and I think I’m trying for the NYC lottery when it opens. I need to dramatically increase mobility, though. Kinda feel bad even trying for NYC when I am nowhere near in the shape I need to be for another marathon. I couldn’t maintain today’s pace another 30 feet, let alone another 13.1 miles.
lol within a few hours of posting this my “plan” for 2023 is already kind of altered as my sister and brother in law want to do the “ET Full Moon” midnight run in Rachel, NV by Area 51 in August. They think they’re gonna do the half marathon and I’ll probably join them for that distance instead of doing the full since it’s more of the experience than trying to set a PR. Seems like a super unique race in a cool area and sticking to the half I think I can just build it into a training plan for a 50-miler in Sep/Oct
Hey, totally missed this, but thanks! It actually totally sucked. It was hot, humid, and sunny. And since it rained a ton the day before the sun was just evaporating moisture out of the ground which made it feel even worse. I did pretty well for the first half, I was hitting pretty close to my goal pace, but I completely broke down in the second half. It just got to me and there was no cover from the sun so I was just melting. I still finished though and didn't aggravate my ankle, so there's that!
This is me just moping / venting but gotta let it out somewhere. It’s been 3 weeks since my last run. Which means the last 3 weeks have been incredibly boring and I feel like I’ve gained 20 pounds. Weekends, which used to be at least one long run to start the weekend, are now me in bed until 1 because I have no reason to get up earlier and do anything. I feel like I’m back in middle school during summer in some ways. Went for a run this morning, since it’s been 3 weeks and that was the low end of time off I should take for my foot and I haven’t really had any issues the last two weeks with pain while increasing longer walks and some light jogging for 10-20 seconds. I ran two miles today and by about 1.5 miles my foot was killing me. Stopped running at 2, walked the last 3/4 of a mile home with limited discomfort but discomfort none the less, and now I’m hobbling like I was 3 weeks ago when I went to get x-rays. FUCK! All I want to do is be able to run and I take for granted now how I never had injuries before and simply just downloaded a training program and went and the biggest issue was getting hill training and avoiding falling on ice. Here I spent probably 15ish hours the last few weeks looking up races and events and planning what I wanted 2023 and 2024 to look like all under the assumption I just needed to start training again and I would be able to do all the races I wanted and I can’t even fucking run two miles.
i'm in the same boat with a high quad strain. haven't run in 2 weeks or so and then my dumbass went out and did 8 miles yesterday and set back all the healing progress i was making. at the beginning of the month i was set to destroy my 2k annual mile goal and now i dont even think i'll make it. shit sucks.
Shit fuckin’ sucks. I’m not sure if I’m more worried that it’s about to be winter and dark like 90% of the day and that combined with no running what that will do to me mentally or if it would be worse to be injured in summer. We had some nice weather days at the beginning of the month that I hated missing so I guess if anything, maybe it’s better to be injured in winter but if this keeps up much longer I may have to reconsider my Austin marathon in February. Sucks enough to miss Rocket City in Alabama in two weeks.
I might need to sideline myself for a few weeks. My ankle is feeling better, finally, but now I'm starting to have knee pain which I've never had before. I got a knee compression sleeve to wear around the house and when I'm walking the dog, etc. and I'll see if that helps.
I was FINALLY able to do a run today without foot pain or issues. So happy about that. So relieved. My stamina of course is totally shot but expect that to return within a few weeks. Just happy as shit right now.
My knee is still bothering me so I'm going to take off running through the end of the year. Based on the location I think it might be an MCL sprain, so hoping rest will do the trick.
After a little over 2 weeks off my knee is feeling much better. I haven't run more than about a half a block (while playing with my kids) but there was no pain during or after that. I can walk a couple miles without any pain either, and no issues riding a stationary bike or using the elliptical. I'm going to take a little more time off, probably until we get back from traveling after Christmas, and start things up again most likely with just 1-mile runs the first couple times, then build up from there.
2530km, someway behind my 2020 lockdown best but injuries have taken their toll - now doing regular strengthening exercised so hopefully won't have that issue next year...
