If you still lived in Chicago there was a 24-hour race not too far outside of the city that my dad did a few times. It was basically a 3-5 mile loop and whoever completed the most loops (ran the farthest distance) in a 24-hour span won or won their age group. People would bring tents, coolers with soda and full meals so they could stop and sleep/refuel. My dad was ok with the repetitive loop structure like you, so you would have been a good candidate haha.

Got a stationary bike to help cross train more. LOVE that the screen turns sideways so I can do weight training classes and Pilates and shit in my living room and not from behind the bike because the screen is stationary.

I have also learned / remembered how boring I find riding a bike lol. Funny that running does bore me but biking does and knowing there are many that feel the opposite. By about 15 minutes in in a bike ride I’m ready for it to be over so I’ve only done short rides so far.

turns out it wasn’t shin splints. Something weird happened with my ankles and calf muscles (old tennis injury appears to be a factor) and I lost all mobility in my ankle. A bit of dry needling and a lot of targeting stretching is slowly relieving the tightness to allow movement again.

I love hour-long spin classes, but put me on a stationary bike by myself or on a road bike and I'm ready to tap out after five minutes.

Swimming is my long-preferred "other" cardio.

Going to have to try the spin classes, haven’t tried one of those yet, just the ride alongs. That’ll be my Sunday morning activity.

So the last two weekends I’ve done my long run on Saturday and then instead of Sunday being a rest day I’ve turned it into active recovery and cleaning apartment day and I like that so much better than just having Sunday be a day off.

for me, I don’t really enjoy full rest days so even in non-running days I do cross training and strength training but Sunday was always the “full 100% rest” day but I can’t do that. I always feel like shit (mentally) in Monday so now I’ll spend Sunday cleaning, so I’m moving around but not exerting myself, and likely doing yoga and/or a light spin class like I did the last two sundays. Really feel like I’m starting to find my groove for a full schedule since I’ve gotten my stationary bike and the other classes you can do with iFIT work really well for me.

I took the most comedic movie looking fall of my life today. Slipped on black ice and smacked tailbone, back of my head, both elbows and both palms simultaneously. And the sound they came out of me when I fell was a noise I would never be able to duplicate outside of another fall lol.

I feel fine right now, and the pain subsided pretty quickly after I got back up, but we’ll see how many back feels tomorrow and later on in the week. I have a history of low back problems so I’m apprehensive about that but not gonna overthink it.

I’ve been able to catch myself thousands of other times before actually falling but this patch got the best of me. And there was absolutely no bracing for it - that shit happened so fast, it’s incredible how fast the body can move :crylaugh:

Damn, that sounds rough. Hope you feel better.

I can run on ice patches with zero issue. Walking - I am a human marble with no direction.

Thanks! The amount of mileage you’re getting in these days is so impressive. The weather just dampens any desire I have to get out there.

Trust me, I completely understand, haha. Until this year, I have always struggled to keep up my mileage/overall enthusiasm for running in the winter. Somehow, I just had my record mileage week, ha. I think for me it's a combination of knowing I have my first marathon to point toward in the spring, plus a milder-than-usual winter in northern Michigan (cold, but not a ton of snow, so footing has been decent).

When is your marathon? We're very different runners, but I definitely overtrained for mine and it left me empty for the latter miles of the race.

We've been a lot colder this year in January, so I ended up taking an extra month off so just getting out in February has been rough. I don't like running in the dark, either, so depending on the weather, it's been tricky. I think this week (6 miles, 3 miles, 8 miles) is the most I've run since I crossed the finish line.

Mine is Memorial Day weekend. My training plan is basically a long, very slow build of intensity and mileage. But since I was already starting from a base of 50-60 miles per week, that leaves some nice openings for big mileage weeks even pretty far out. And plenty of flexibility to pull back, say, next week if I want to do that.

One of the nice things about my work situation is that I always have enough flexibility in my day to run when the weather/daylight/etc. is optimal. I don't have to fit a run in before work in the morning or after work in the evening, but can go instead in the middle of the morning or the afternoon. That definitely makes training in the winter easier.

I think the most mileage I got up to was 32 miles in one week, so you're definitely going to do incredible, haha. I did the standard "first marathon" build up to where you get 8 30+ mile weeks in a row, then taper down three weeks to the race. I just kept building up to those eight weeks, then COVID-delays kept happening, so I ended up running almost 1200 miles before the race, and beginners should (so "they" say) not get more than 500-600 before their first race.

Yeah. My options are getting out the door by 5:45 and running loops around my subdivision (hate circular runs) or racing the setting sun on the greenways by work until the time change. Makes it tough to go for any distance longer than 3 during the week. (I think my favorite distance is 5 miles. Long enough to feel really good, but short enough to not dominate my time because I am very slow.)

Oh yeah, I forgot how screwed up your training got by COVID. That's definitely tough. I was about to start training for my first half when everything shut down, and didn't end up running one of those until last July. Funnily enough, when I did finally run that race, I did it basically as a spontaneous decision 10-ish days out, so I didn't end up training for it deliberately at all. Definitely trying to approach this one...very differently!

Ugh, that's really a tough situation for winter training. Makes it hard to do much of anything. And you don't want to do too much on the treadmill, because that's boring as shit.

Yeah, I was 75% through my half training when everything shut down. I 'd actually ran a 10K on Saturday, then everything shut down on Monday or something like that. I really enjoy the half distance, so I'm hoping this half I've got next month helps me feel better at the finish line than the marathon did.

I really hate treadmill running. I think I'd like it a smidge more if I didn't see numbers and clocks. I'd rather be unaware. It's why I prefer audiobooks over music when running: disguises time.

If I'm on the treadmill I really have to do some sort of speed play. Otherwise, I just get so bored. It almost doesn't matter what I try to do to entertain myself: music, podcasts, watching TV or movies, etc. The minutes and miles just crawl by.

To celebrate being 4 weeks out from my Iowa marathon I started putting together my playlist for it. Trying to aim for mostly songs from 2020 and 2021 but there are some classics that will be on every playlist for me (“I’m Still Standing” by Elton John for example)
