Got a new pair of shoes since Sports Authority is going for broke.

Unfortunately, my shins are just throbbing in pain right now from running. I feel like I've done everything to get them back in to running shape, but nothing seems to be helping.

I usually run 5 or 6 days out of the week. Most of the time my runs are 8 or 10 miles during the weekdays and 12-15 Saturday and Sunday. I try and make sure that at least 1 of my runs if in the 6:00 pace range overall. No speedwork right now. That is my downfall.

If your shins hurt, you probably need more support from your shoes.

That's solid. 9 is an odd amount of miles. That would drive me crazy haha. I did a great run in downtown San Francisco last weekend which was 10 @ 6:55. I do a lot of stroller running with my daughter too which adds a whole new dynamic.

I asked my doctor that, and he was saying the injury I have probably has nothing to do with that. I've switched shoes three times now hoping to see a difference. I think I just need to ease into it a bit more. I've mostly been sticking to the bike and doing different stretches.

  9. I'm jealous of you all with your stupid fast paces! 7:55/mile for a 5k is the fastest longest run I've ever done and I nearly died when I crossed the line. Usually during the week I'm running at about 8:30/mile.

I used to be ridiculous about 5 years ago when I was really dialed in. My average pace was about 6:25 with over 2000 miles for the year.

I can still hold down a decent 5K time in the lower 18:00 range at max effort. But gone are the days of a near effortless 17:20 5K for me.

  13. After three years, my free runs finally ripped today. Please recommend some shoes, I would gladly appreciate it :)

  14. I just bought a pair of Nike Winflo2s. They're neutral, have a decent heel-toe drop, and are lightweight. I love them. I was running in Flexs

Friend did Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota yesterday, and the heat was hard on everybody in the last half of the race; mid-70's and humid. Sun just rained down on all the competitors. Friend walked the last half mile, including across the finish line, because his legs just turned to lead.

    So this happened yesterday

I was part of a team triathlon Saturday morning, where one guy kayaked/canoed 7k, another ran a 5k, and another did a 10k bike ride, over a mix of pavement and trails. I elected to do the biking part, and none of us had done a triathlon race before. I had a mountain bike, but it's from middle school and is essentially stuck in one gear, so wouldn't be useful at all on the hills I'd be encountering, so I elected to use my friend's road bike instead, that at least had a front suspension on it. The tires were decently think too, so after playing around with it a bit before the race I thought it'd be adequate for the race.

Come race morning, getting to the bike corral to wait for my 5k running teammate, I noticed tons of pure road bikes, with no suspension at all, that you'd only see on a road. I was like "wtf??". It was really hot/humid this morning too; it was probably in the mid-to-high 80's by the time my friend handed off the timing bracelet to me. Since most people in this event were doing it solo, or with just two people, there weren't that many full team relays like us(like 5 teams total). So in the first few miles I was blasting by people. Trails weren't all that tough; because of the thinner tires the bike would slide more, but it was ok. About 5 miles in, on a sidewalk on a slight downward slope going to the left, I remember I believe encountering a road that crossed the sidewalk and briefly going over the handlebars. Next thing I knew I was answering questions from a cop who was giving me water. Told me I had been out for a few seconds, and gave different answers to the same questions initially. Eventually I started giving normal answers, but I had scrapes all over my body, my helmet was cracked, with likely head trauma, so an ambulance came and took my to a hospital in Minneapolis. After getting my left arm x-rayed, no full bone breakage, but because of the blunt force my left arm took in landing, it created swelling in my wrist and elbow; got a sling to use for two weeks while it heals(no case or surgery, wooohoo). Bunch of bandages all over, that hopefully I won't need in a few days. Def had headaches throughout the day yesterday and throughout the night, but they have decreased in length and severity(with help of Tylenol of course). So I'll be out of work a few days, but I'm on the mend, so all should be well. Just goes to show how truly important it is to wear a helmet while biking, no matter where you are or at what speed you're going.

I'll probably stick to running from now on, at least for the time being.

  21. im totally fucked for my 10k race this weekend. Did 9:00/mile for 4.5 miles and I was pooped. at least I get a tank, hoping not a lot of people show so I can get a medal

It's always really bad for me to take any extended amount of time without running. I've been trying to get back into it this week and it's been difficult.

Yeah I'm going to be out for a few weeks here, so I'm probably going to try using the bike machine at my local gym while I recover

After you've taken off a good bit of time, it's always best to start small; slow and steady pace, and just a few miles. Then slowly work your way back up.

Glad you're ok @Ferrari333SP. That sounds like a gnarly crash.

I have been MIA lately. Pretty much my time is working, running, and strength/core training. My marathon is in October, so I am happy to report that I have gotten my long run up to 17 miles. As I get further into things I am going to start looking to schedule some races like 5 and 10 k's to add the competition factor and speed work to the mix.
