It's 178 miles. It starts and ends in Reno going trough Tahoe and Carson City. It's a pretty crazy event with the high elevation and uphills. We all run three legs of varying difficulty. We averaged 5:55 pace I think.
Yeah we have something up here in the Midwest called the Ragnar; it's pretty much the same thing. You get a team of 6 or 12 people, and then over a distance of like 180-200 miles, every person runs a couple different legs of varying length. What's dumb about the Ragnar, as I just learned(as my friends and I were interested in maybe doing the event) is that you don't run the fastest you can; you submit what your ideal leg finishing times are, and so then you're supposed to run as close to those times as possible. So if you run faster than your advertised times, you get like slowed down or penalized or something. So yeah, pretty strange. They have trail Ragnar in Wisconsin that we might do; instead of point to point, there's a main basecamp, and then each team member runs a certain loop, that starts and ends at the camp, with three different loops to do, of varying length/difficulty.
I'm way more scared of mountain lions. But I love trail running in the foothills, so it's just something you have to hope never happens.
just wear a bell around your neck, wrist or ankle. anything that makes noise really and that will stave off bear attacks. they usually attack when scared / surprised so most outdoor folks say to wear a noise maker to keep safe.
so, it's becoming a fact. i have my best runs when listening to Brian Fallon's Painkillers. this is probably the third or fourth great run i've had in a month and all 4 have come while listening to this. not sure if it's the easy beats or what, but i get in the zone with it.
Goal for this year is to break 20 minutes in the 5K; closest I've ever got was 20:02 senior year of cross country in high school. Right now I can probably do low 21's/high 20's
Finding this thread late, but does anyone have a Nike+ account? I think it'd be fun if there's a group of us all on there to start setting up weekly/monthly challenges. Or, is there an app that most people use where this is already happening? Because I'd like to get in on that
i tried asking a bit ago about that but it doesn't seem like there is a consensus. i switched from nike + to strava a while back. Cj Mckinney | Runner on Strava
nice i got a brother in reno and hes always posting pictures of epic hikes that make me super jealous
Reno has some awesome running. He probably goes to the Rancho San Refael area. I just did an 8 mile trail run on my lunch break. There's some great single track trails across the street from my office. Where are you from?
Whew, did 12 miles this morning in 82 degree heat; our group run had aid stations with gel blocks and Nuun specialty drink, but still, that was a struggle. Had a 40g of protein Muscle Milk drink and a bottle of Body Armour sports drink after, and now I'm feeling much better. Leaving this coming Wednesday night to head up to Duluth to support a friend doing Grandma's marathon next Saturday, so that should be fun.
Yess, my decision in sticking to 5K's has been vindicated! The 5K, Not The Marathon, Is The Ideal Race
awesome. i usually run about 3-4 miles a day and was wondering if i should start moving it up to the 6-7 range. i mean, it doesn't hurt to run more, but this article made me feel great, haha. thanks for the link.
What does everyone's week look like? Mine is usually Monday and Tuesday: 5k Wednesday: HIIT (1/4 mile splits for 2-2.5 miles total) Thursday: rest or cross-training (usually bike or body weight exercises) Friday: 5k Saturday: longer run, around 10k or a little more Sunday: rest
i don't have anything set in stone, but the last two weeks it's been more: S: rest M: 5k, arms / upper body T: 5k, kettle bell W: 5k, bike, yoga or extended stretching T: 5k, kettle bell F: 5k, arms / upper body S: 5k, kettle bell
I wish I had more time to get that much running in; I mean I run with a running club on Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays after work, at 6pm, so running with them it's equal parts staying fit and getting faster gradually, while also meeting various people that join these runs every week. Each run is usually 4-5 miles, with the Monday course having plenty of hills, while the Wednesday/Thursday runs are flatter, but faster. Plus I'm trying to devote more time to reading certain subjects I'm trying to know more about, and with grad school going on, it makes it tougher. If I was really serious about my training I'm pretty sure I could find a way to fit in that kind of training (which ideally I'd like to), but I guess I'm just not that serious or motivated to run that much.
i get 3/4 runs in a week averaging 4-5 miles a run. i was pretty hard on my body during my formative years, running 7 days a week every week and im paying for it now. i was definitely addicted to excercise. years later i'm still working on trying to find the right balance.
I need to start going to my local running club's meetings. Did you just show up by yourself one day or did you and a friend join? I'm a little introverted so just showing up and not knowing anyone is a little nerve wracking, but i'll do it if I have to. Yeah, luckily I have an 8-5 job, so I can just run in the evenings after work and in the mornings on weekends. I'd also like to start incorporating weight lifting into that, but if I did, it'd mean going to the gyms early in the morning before work and I'm not a morning person haha.
