Anyone have a preference when it comes to salt tablets? I've seen some people talk about them positively lately, especially for summer long runs, on runtok but there are hundreds of options on Amazon.

I've transitioned from doing 5-mile runs 2-3 times a week to doing 7-mile runs 2-3 times a week; taking a while for my body to adjust, but think I'm getting better at it. I'm 190 pounds with lots of muscles in my legs from my sprinting days, so my legs are my first thing to go on my runs, but getting better. Route I do is a trail route with almost 400 feet of total elevation gain, so good hill training on it too. Much better for my left knee too, as I have runners knee that flares up when I do mostly hard surfaces

Just dropped my half marathon PR from 1:51:30 to 1:50:10 *on a training run*. Granted, it was a high intensity training run that I was pushing myself on, but when I saw the PR was within range I launched off for the final three miles. Really proud I had that in my legs. Been working so damn hard this summer, but it’s so hard to see the progress in the heat.

Any tips on dealing with bronchitis a month out from a race? Thankfully, most of the sickness fell on a de-load week. But I've got a ton of miles I need to get in the next two weeks and can't stop coughing.

Nothing for the actual running. Usually will pop in a fisherman’s friend right before running. Post run I usually let my shower and room get really steamy before going in. After a couple minutes I will let it air out

This Camille Herron stuff gets dumber with each passing day. Her “apology” post was truly superb, wild how people’s egos and attitudes can be.

Second straight year with a world record for the Chicago marathon, this time for the women. Pretty cool to spectate it

man i’ve been dealing with chronic achilles tendinitis on my left foot all year. last time this happened i took a month off and it was all good. i’ve tried everything this time and it won’t go away. i’ve done physical therapy coupled with just cycling all of september. tried a few slow 3 milers and it came right back. so depressing.

Incredible. I wonder what makes Chicago the course for it.

I think the course is pretty flat for the most part? If I’m correct, that along with usually cooler temperatures would be a good combo. I know I usually feel like a million bucks on flat surfaces with temps around 60 or less lol

Just enough wind in some years where it doesn’t disqualify times either. I feel like I read that on Reddit a couple years ago. There’s another top marathon race that offers the same advantage

It really is flat as a pancake except for the “Mount Roosevelt” hill right before the finish line, which is really just a small bridge over train tracks

Last year it was in the 40s and 50s temperature wise. This year it was low 60s to start at like 5:30 but actually got cooler over the morning and more windy. Sun just came out for a couple hours and heated things up but the fast runners would have been done or finishing up by then

I’m running my first marathon outside of Tennessee in two weeks and I am so curious what a long distance race that’s mostly flat actually feels like.

I personally absolutely hated it. The marathon I did in Des Moines was like 400 feet total of elevation and my quads were killing me and I felt like I had wooden legs for about a week afterwards and any sort of squat motion was almost impossible - I had to stop and plan it out if I needed to bend down to get something from a shelf or something lol

You end up using the same muscle groups over and over again if the entire route is flat (or only uphill or only downhill too I suppose) so there’s no variation in your form so you overwork certain muscles while completely ignoring/can’t use others

I think the MCM only has 300 feet of elevation change, and at least 1/3 of that is the final .2, so this is good to know about the muscles and your experience.

I think I’m more nervous right now than I was before either of my others. The brain is weird.

Missed matching my PR from April by 6 seconds. Back spasmed at 21.5 and I lost a 3:46 or so just trying to keep it loose. It was the best race I’d trained for and run. Didn’t go out to fast. Settled in my pace. It was doing so good.

but I’m still damn proud. Two sub-4 marathons in one year after never running regularly before 2020, getting down 40 pounds… running really fixed my head in a lot of ways. I’ll never qualify for a world major, and I’m definitely not doing a full in 2025. But I’m a fan of the half and will do one of those in April.

Also if you’re a sub-4 marathoner, the MCM is a fantastic course. It looked like absolute hell in the over-4 pace groups, though. My buddy went 4:59 and he had to weave so much he ran 27

    Congrats on your race!

Im almost to the point where I’d rather show up late and start like 20-30 minutes after everyone else has started. Every race I’ve done has been a bit of a shitshow no matter which group I start with (granted that’s only ranged between like 3:50-4:50 timing). People flying past me like burnout isn’t real to people starting with what almost looks like walking (why are you so far up if you’re waking?????), so much time and energy spent going sideways and squeezing through people - whether it was in San Francisco with thousands or in Iowa with like 60 people they always seem to start the same to me lol
