Today I’m thrilled to introduce everyone to Royal Blush, the Alt Rock band from New Jersey, who have released their debut EP called A Ways Away in May, who now have put the finishing touches on the video for the lead single of ”Go.” Formed by guitarist Andrew Merclean, and later joined by vocalist Allison Heckart and guitarist/producer Patryk Sikorski, this trio is already making waves. Heckart’s vocal range is somewhere in the same realm as Hayley Williams and Pinkshift’s Ashrita Kuma, while she truly has a unique style of her own. If you’re enjoying “Go,” please consider supporting the band here.

”Go” takes a much heavier, grungier turn compared to earlier singles like “Cherry Cola” and “Ice Age.” What inspired this shift, and how did you approach capturing that emotional intensity in the video?

Heavier lyrics! “Go” goes from 0 to 100 on the emotional spectrum and we really wanted the instrumentation to match the message. And we have been itching to put a little bit of rage into a new song… On the video-side, It’s been a ton of fun discovering its visual world. Our videographer, Liz Sadkowski, guided us through her vision and we’re really excited by how the song is told through her direction! The lighting was a big focus for her – using dark tones with small hints of color, representing the yin and yang of memories. Even the worst moments and relationships have nuance.

Your EP, A Ways Away, explores themes like mental overload, anger, vulnerability, and collective resistance. Were there any specific moments or personal experiences that shaped the message behind the project?

What’s special about music is that it gives you allowance to feel someone’s story as your own. A lot of what’s behind A Ways Away is grief and love. While working on these songs, all of us had to grapple with things in our lives ending abruptly. Friendships, relationships, life things…These songs were kind of our roadmap to picking up the pieces. Finding closure is a process and music definitely helps. One thing that ended up being really clear to us is that love and loss are two sides of the same coin. Nothing is simple and nuance is everything. This never-ending cycle life puts on the table! We’re all in it together

Royal Blush has built a name in the tri-state DIY scene with your live sets. How has performing songs in these intimate spaces influenced the way you write and connect as a band?

We love the DIY-ethos. We will always play in places that value culture and expression over profit and rat race shit. Communal art spaces are sacred spaces and we’ve been really blessed to play some of the best. Rubulad, the Meatlocker, Eel Pit zine shows and of course, Our Wicked Lady (forever.) And you meet the best bands at these gigs. The inspiration is endless! Our area really is overflowing with insane talent and a welcoming community that leaves us feeling inspired, supported and pushed to do our thing. It takes a village to make Royal Blush songs and we are so grateful to be a part of it.
