Round of 64 (Tier 3): Parasite vs. The New World

Round one is here. 61 years of film with 3 convenient ties. What film will come out on top?

For this round, we start with:

PARASITE, Bong joon-ho's biting critique of the capitalist system. Who is the parasite, the poor family who wiggles their way into the family via servitude, or the wealthy who use whatever they want, including human beings? A sign of a great satire is that even the people it is critiquing enjoy it, evident by the celebrities who praised it and the awards it was bestowed.

THE NEW WORLD, Malick's exploration of the literal clash of civilizations and the beauty and the ugliness that comes with it. Even when criticizing Malick for being reduced from his role in the film, Christopher Plummer had to admit that every frame was a painting. This was the film that symbolized Malick's continuing withdrawal from narrative; other than a few story beats, it is a tone poem.

Not an easy call. I think I lean New World but it’s tough.

 

Parasite might be one of the best films ever made, so that’s an easy one to me.

 

Haven’t seen The New World

 

The wrong film is probably going to win this one, but both are major modern works.

 

Parasite is great, and I'm fine with its inevitable victory, but I highly recommend The New World to those who haven't seen it. I feel like it doesn't get discussed much, but it's a true hidden gem.

How do you portray a moment such as this, a time before photographs, a time that is so historically significant, but also the seeds of the beginning of the genocide and destruction we know to come? We know so much today that is hard to portray that sense of wonder that those people must have felt, both native and English, as they encountered a world that had developed completely independent of them for the entirety of human history. Certain films and certain scenes render other irrelevant because of their quality and beauty, and trying to tell that story when The New World exists is a big reach.

 

I havent seen the New World. So many movies out there to see, from this list...

The New World is great. There's nothing wrong with a movie being not as good as Parasite. There are very few that are
