Round one is here. 61 years of film with 3 convenient ties. What film will come out on top? For this round, we start with: MEAN STREETS, Martin Scorsese's breakout film about a man's struggle between serving God (literally) and succumbing to the devils in his New York neighborhood. Much more raw and DIY than his later films, Scorsese explores those choices we make as young men as to what path to go down. Against... PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, Paul Thomas Anderson's "romance" about a deeply disturbed and traumatized man and the way those extremes manifest themselves between bouts of violence and absurd romantic gestures. It constantly goes for the obtuse an off-kilter, and showed the world that Happy Gilmore was a gifted performer in other ways than slapstick. The winner will move on to the next round. The full bracket is attached below.
Another easy choice for me, Mean Streets is probably one of my least favourite Scorsese films and PDL is one of my all time favourites.
A lof o you all enjoyed PDL.. Maybe I didnt watch the whole thing... maybe it just wasnt for me, and I like Sandler.... BUt Mean Streets is my choice on this one.
