Round one is here. 61 years of film with 3 convenient ties. What film will come out on top?

For this round, we start with:

GOOD TIME, the break-out film from the Safdie brothers, where we follow the exploits of a man who is racing against the walls that he deep down knows will close in on him before he can escape. The unease and feeling of dread you feel in a Safdie film has continued to be refined, but here is where they started to get mainstream recognition.

    Against...

ERASERHEAD, David Lynch's terrifying debut about the feelings of uncertainty that comes with becoming a parent. Decades and hundreds of millions of dollars have failed to make anything as terrifying and unsettling as that baby.

The winner will move on to the next round. The full bracket is attached below.

I am shocked at the results. Good Time is good but how can you compare it to Eraserhead?

Yeah I’m starting to wonder if the Safdie Brothers hype has gotten out of control lol I was a big fan of Good Time but had no idea it was this popular. Good Time is a good time but Eraserhead is really special.

eraserhead is special, monumental, and the launchpad for one of the greatest auteurs in history. it all comes down movie vs. movie imo. avant garde filmmaking just isn't for everyone. the hype around A24, safdies, pattinson, etc in their own individual segments is also undeniable in terms of potential overhype-ness, but when this movie came out it felt like this perfect storm of anxiety that felt so tangible. i've always been drawn to walter hill, sidney lumet, etc so good time felt like one of the best representations of old new york city in our fucked up modern times. from the smallest performances to 0pn's masterful score it just feels like something that the scope of cinema had been missing for quite some time. its a personal favorite of mine and based on prestige alone it probably shouldn't advance but the fact that it has a bit of steam behind it in our fun little bracket is awesome. this is the chorus.fm list not AFI, and lynch's better movie will hopefully continue to roll through the bracket as well (FWWM).

Lynch is a terrific filmmaker, and I love Blue Velvet and The Straight Story, but I just don't connect with Eraserhead. Good Time is the easy winner.

Good Time is great but Eraserhead is one of those movies that imprints into the back of your head forever.

With 59 percent of the vote, Eraserhead will face The Silence of the Lambs in the Round of 32.
