Round of 32 (New Comedies): Bojack Horseman vs. Atlanta

A story about a washed-up horse going against a story about the Atlanta rap scene. Who will you pick?

Both shows are A+ but this is a good example of how TV comparisons are trickier than movies. Bojack has the benefit of being complete (and ending strongly) whereas Atlanta is unfinished. Atlanta's two seasons are exceptionally good, but you don't know what the final product will look like.

 

How much do you weigh bad seasons? I would rate The Simpsons the same today as I would if we had just finished Season Nine.

For example, we will probably inevitably get Seinfeld vs. The Simpsons, but in my head it will be Seinfeld seasons 3-7 versus The Simpsons seasons 2-9.

 

I agree with that approach; the challenge here is that neither show has had a bad season (Bojack's first season is just okay, but hardly terrible).

I think Atlanta's quality is equal to Bojack's, but there is more uncertainty around what Atlanta will ultimately be, so it's easier to default to Bojack because it's a completed work.

 

I've only seen the first three Bojack seasons but I like Atlanta waaay more.

 

I love both so much but went with Atlanta

 

If Bojack loses in round 1 trash the bracket

 

If I’m multiple seasons into a show and I need to keep being told “just wait it gets better”…idk. Atlanta it is

 

Atlanta could end up overtaking Bojack but it's really just a longevity thing right now.

 

Let it be known that I tried to warn you! Too many people do not understand that just because a show gets “better” doesn’t mean that it actually changes at all haha. It just gets better at being the show that it already is. I love Bojack but sorry you duped lol

 

Could never once get into Bojack.

 

To be fair, I did kinda come around to it in s3 and loved the Fantastic Planet ep, but just never kept going

 

I love both of these shows. Gonna go with Bojack for now, will think on it for a couple days while the poll is open. I love the rapid fire joke structuring, but at times it feels a little exhausting. Some of the best long running jokes and payoffs I’ve seen on television though. And of course the depiction of depression, self destruction, existentialism, and trauma are all handled crushingly well

Atlanta has this magic about it where it feels like anything can happen. B.A.N., Teddy Perkins, and Champagne Papi are all top tier shit. But it’s a still airing show that I can see going either way in quality. I’d also be lying if I said Lakeith’s behavior outside the show didn’t affect my enjoyment of my favorite character

With the caveat that I haven’t seen the Sopranos or half of the wire and plan on not voting when we get to those matchups, there might not be a show I vote for over Bojack. Like 3 tossups for me looking at the bracket

Coming from a person that just recently finished the show for the first time after having it “on my list” for 10+ years — you should move it up to #1!
