  1. this site used to be a blink 182 fan site but then people saw the light, maybe in five years the same will happen here

  2. this one is still close, so im willing to change it if im wrong, but i doubt we get 7 votes in the next 45 minutes. seems that Futures will move onto the Round of 16 with 52% of the vote

  6. looking at the bracket, i really don't think that's the case. people are going to have to make tough choices pretty soon

I kinda stopped voting for Futures in subsequent rounds because of it haha. People can “never change, Chorus” this all they want but Jimmy definitely only won due to a boost that Prince was not equally afforded

I mean, Purple Rain is amazing, but I guarantee you that more people on this site have a genuine and passionate adoration for Futures. The simple fact that Futures won given the people voting means it deserved to win, because there is no higher significance to any of this than “what do you like?” This entire exercise has been asking people their favorite albums: favorites of a year, favorites of specific matchups, etc. If you didn’t want people to vote for what they love, why even bother with any of this?

Idk, I guess years of seeing people post shit like “Why isn’t X on the AP.net/Chorus EOTY list?!” has made these types of conversations extremely eyeroll-worthy to me. It’s never because whatever album people are upset about not being included isn’t great, it’s simply that it wasn’t a consensus pick among a (very small!) voting pool. It’s the same thing here. Purple Rain is a generational masterpiece, and would have been a great final four pick; it also lost to an album that, if you have spent a day on this website, you should probably have known was going to win.

  12. them having a genuine and passionate adoration for the album doesn't disprove what the other people are saying.

Also Blink got merked by Neutral Milk Hotel in the very first round and I think it’s pretty inarguable that they have a much bigger following here. Not sure the “more adoration” logic tracks even if it’s statistically true

  14. also there are several bands that are a good amount bigger than jimmy on this site (paramore, fall out boy, my chem to name a few) that never really stood a chance. there are a large subsection of jimmy voters that literally didn't participate in any of the other threads or any of the other votes for the full length of this thing lol. that sucks!

I think it does? It's only "fuckin crazy" that Futures won this poll if you ignore the context of where the bracket took place and who you were asking to vote.

I think Blink is extremely divisive among the core userbase of this forum, and I think that poll proved it. I'd point out that NMH got similarly "merked" by a peak-era Beatles album in the next round, which in turn lost by 20+ votes to Futures. Whether or not you like the outcome, the bracket worked the way it was supposed to.

I feel like you're kind of making my point, lol. There's a pocket of ardent enough fans of that band around here that they showed up to vote even if they weren't following the entire bracket. They even showed up when I wasn't campaigning for it, like when Bleed American came within a stone's throw ousting Born to Run. The fact that the Jimmy Eat World threads had a bigger turn out shows why they'd be a logical winner on this particular site.

It happened in reality. In reality, in the world anywhere, it’s fuckin crazy that Futures beat Purple Rain. I wasn’t even bringing in the whole thing about this thread having more votes than any other, mainly because its a silly tournament that doesn’t matter

I just don't get being upset by the outcomes of the rounds, or the outcomes of the bracket at all. You asked people to vote for what they liked more; they did. End of story. If you asked this same group of people to make a list of albums they find historically important or influential, the outcome would probably have looked a lot different. But that wasn't the question! It was a subjective prompt and you're mad that people voted subjectively.

I'm probably going to lose Born to Run this round, to an album I personally find to be extremely overrated. Who gives a shit? If people like OK Computer more, they should vote for it. It's not "fuckin crazy." It's just a bunch of different opinions on a website.

I am not mad. I was listening to Purple Rain tonight and forgot what it lost to, so I checked and posted it. I was making dinner, I continued to make and eat dinner. Everyone will be okay

I love Purple Rain. I love Futures more. I voted for the one I love more.

  20. Despite the fact that I do very much agree with what you’re saying here re: this forum’s complicated relationship with Blink, I think the thing we’re maybe all dancing around here is that the difference between Jimmy beating Prince and a band like Blink losing to NMH is that there was no bat signal in Blink’s dedicated, booming thread to funnel in people to vote specifically for it. The matchups that followed are sorta moot because without all of those drive by Jimmy votes it wouldn’t have had the opportunity to begin with

But yeah, similar to spo I’m not like, genuinely upset or anything lol. It just felt like a forced turning point in a bracket where unconventional Chorus faves actually stood a chance. Voting for Futures afterward felt a little icky within that context, but my feelings about it end there. Without the thread bump I’d have never posted about it again

Ah, I get what you’re saying. I suppose that’s fair, but there have been numerous instances in this bracket where polls got shared in official threads (Bowie, Radiohead, Weezer, Beatles, Bon Iver) and not all of those were successful for getting those albums wins. Would a signal boost for Prince in the Prince thread have been enough to get it a win here? Hard to know for sure, but I doubt it, considering that thread isn’t super active.

These polls have also been stickied at the top of the music forum for days at a time. It was always fair game for Blink fans to vote for a Blink record, or what have you. I’m just not that worried about the “purity” of the vote in a situation where every single person on this forum had the ability to cast a vote if/when they wanted to.

I think that was inevitable, though. The beginning was a trip back to music years a lot of people know less well, and was a judgment-free place to discuss music, praise things you love, and fill in blind spots through discovery. The horse race aspect (what won each year) was always the least interesting and least fun part, so it stands to reason that the bracket itself would be a lot less fun than the threads that led to it. Still a worthwhile exercise, and I've had fun casting votes and seeing how the polls shake out, but the conversation has gotten a little too much like this immortal exchange from Billy Madison:
