glad I got to see this in theaters, no way I would be able to watch a movie with subtitles at home, and the Netflix logo at the beginning was jarring
yeah this was gorgeous, and the black and white was used well
I feel like only Cuaron would make a movie about Chloe, and it was sweet that he made a movie about his relationship with his childhood nanny any other filmmaker I imagine would focus on Sofia's story though I understand that story's been told before
I felt bad every time they called Sofi fat, she was so sweet and cute
choosing to believe Borras shitting everywhere was a critique of capitalism, Antonio deserved to step in dog shit, Sofia less so

The cinematography is gorgeous. Right after where she finds out shes pregnant is when the movie gets really great for me. Everything before that I'm meh on.

actually feel this, still recommend training yourself to toss your phone for a couple hours and experience what world cinema has to offer but I admittedly have to rewind occasionally after catching myself refreshing a feed

  15. This was beautiful. Intimate, yet also felt grand. I need to think on it more and read some reviews by latinx critics to gain perspective.

Loved this. Probably my favorite non horror movie I’ve seen this year.

I cannot believe the actress that played Cleo has never acted before. One of the most raw performances I’ve ever seen. If you live within an hour of a theater playing this make the drive do not just watch it at home.

It is very good. The film really captures the silent pain and repressed emotions that these types of workers go through, sometimes feeling like part of the family only to be put in their place when there is something to be done. She loves the children, but it is clear that they exhibit the same expectations of her that the parents do, and as they get older they will do so more and more. Cleo is forced to keep her personal life at bay while also being around and a part of the most important moments of the family. When she does finally break down, she almost immediately goes back to work because she knows the family is only concerned with her only until dinner is not ready or the laundry is not done.

More importantly, is refreshing to see a filmmaker go back to more personal, introspective work after tasting blockbuster success. Time and time again we have seen directors make one or two small films and immediately jump to make Jurassic Park 11 or Star Wars 15 or Spider Man 7, but Cuaron has made his smallest film since Y Tu Mama Tambien. It brings out his best qualities; he shoots Mexican culture with a soft touch and honesty, while all of his English-language films have been set in fantastical environments that naturally change the way you deal with characters and their troubles.

Even though I’ve never been to Mexico the environments felt welcoming and familiar. So many small aspects of Mexican culture are presented without any major focus they’re just there but the flesh out the world so well.
