It's different when he knows exactly what ship the plans are on from the very beginning, though. And it still doesn't explain how it makes no sense that Leia would be at that battle in the first place. I think you're focusing on the wrong part of what I was saying.

there was definitely some clunky dialogue, but also some good stuff
K-2SO was obviously the best, and I found it hilarious/amazing that they very clearly gave him a robot ass
DIego and Felicity had great chemistry and his performance was so good

I found the film pretty boring and confusing at times. It just felt like a really good fan-made film (minus the big Hollywood CGI planet explosions). I can't imagine any non-Star Wars fans really enjoying it all that much. I didn't feel all that emotionally invested in the characters - particularly the leads. Honestly, the robot (and the blind asian guy) was more likeable. Force Awakens had many flaws (ie making the originals feel redundant/less special by rebooting everything) but at leasy Rey and Finn stand out. Plus the CGI of Grand Moff Tarkin, whilst admittedly decent, still looked too... obvious and weird.

Guess the plot just bored me and I missed the whole jedi lore and Skywalker family opera saga. Maybe I'm more of a casual fan than I realise.

I just saw it for the first time earlier today. There were a lot of strong points but my god, this movie failed to make me care about these characters at ALL. I didn't feel an emotional connection to ANY of those people.

When all the characters died at the end, instead of feeling an emotional reaction I was thinking more along the lines of "Which one is that person, again?"... if the characters were fleshed out instead of being underdeveloped sketches of characters, that wouldn't be a problem. There were a lot of other things I liked, but that was a pretty major problem considering I was supposed to feel something by the end.

i'm admittedly a more casual fan, and not a movie buff by any stretch of the means, but i was ok with the subpar character development. there's 7 other movies to tell my why i should care for the good guys. it was easy for me to go into this just wanting to be entertained and to accept that this one's not about the characters, its about death star plans. and i got death star plans.

I feel like the ending to this is pretty contingent on us feeling SOMETHING about these characters by then, and I didn't feel like I had gotten to know any of them well. Several of them were interesting but not expanded upon, and the bond they supposedly shared by the end did not feel earned at all by what came before. Like when one of the temple warriors called Jin "sister"... they barely interacted the entire movie. What happened in the movie that suddenly made him feel that strongly? Things like that bugged me probably more than they should, but imo it was a pretty fundamental flaw.

I know I'm late to the thread, but I think this is absolutely perfectly stated, and sums up most of my own issues with the film very neatly.

I liked this a lot more than TFA, especially the Vader scene at the end

Honestly despite its flaws, I think I did enjoy this movie a lot. It's definitely flawed, like TFA, but like others have said in here I'd take them any day over the prequels. They still do a good job of capturing the spirit of what made Star Wars great.

Disney has done about as good a job with the franchise as I could've reasonably hoped, and I'm happy with that.

I liked the idea of this movie a lot more than I thought I would. Just one short piece about a new set of characters placed in the Star Wars universe instead of a trilogy was very enjoyable for me. I would say I liked the characters from The Force Awakens more overall, but yeah anything beats the prequels. Every character was boring and lifeless and it didn't help that they were dropped into completely fake scenery.
