Mon Mothma was played by the same actress who played her in Episode III, so at least there's continuity there.

Also weird to see defenses like "the franchise is fan-service" and "you're overthinking it" and "it had flaws but I don't care". That's fine for someone personally to feel that way, but not a valid defense of critique. It wouldn't be for Marvel movies or any other franchises, and it's not for Star Wars.

So? It just shows that they could have recast Tarkin as well and it would have been accepted.

although i'd say for people criticizing the movie for not having more fleshed out characters with backstories AND also saying the movie was boring in the beginning....i mean...maybe there's a reason why they cut to the chase

I didn't notice the score as much until my second viewing really so I don't blame you on that.

I particularly loved the song when they arrived on Jedha. It was this really loud bombastic thing they had going on. I'll probably end up watching it again today or Sunday so I'll hopefully have more feedback then. The ambush scene on Jedha is another that springs to mind.

I know this is all fantasy booking at this point, but they should have had a different nemesis for Krennic (since that's the only reason Tarkin is in this in the first place) that was a proxy for Tarkin (like, say, Charles Dance) and have him answer to Tarkin via hologram. That way, we don't get the jarring trip through uncanny valley and you can kind of forgive the CGI and still have Tarkin in it, if you must.

man the cgi for these actors literally didn't bother me in the least bit. especially the Tarkin recreation...i honestly didn't even notice, perhaps I wasn't looking for it.

even the carrie fisher thing....i thought it was fine for that one moment

I'm in the minority it seems, universally, that I actually kind of dug the Tarkin recreation. I'm pretty sure they got permission from his family to do that. Leia's face seemed more pear-shaped to me as well but it was very brief. Really loved her inclusion. Looked better second viewing as well. I think it was needed after all that had just transpired. Can't wait to watch Episode IV. Just thinking about it, Vader seems more pissed and annoyed than ever. Leia is trying to say she's on a diplomatic mission when he literally just saw her speed off with a stolen transmission.

didn't they recast Tarkin for episode 3 for the brief scene of him, vader and the emperor overlooking the death star construction near the ending anyways? why not just reuse him?

My friend who is a casual fan didn't know Tarkin was CGI. Personally I thought Leia looked worse despite only being there for 10 seconds.

  11. Tarkin was a little distracting and overused, but I was ok with it overall. Leia worked for me much better, given that it was brief.

Some other complaints. I thought Forest Whitaker's character bordered on goofy, idk I'd have to watch it again to judge for myself. I agree that Jyn's arc could've been fleshed out more. The character work in this is nowhere near what TFA did, though I guess that's always been Abram's strong suit. My friend mentioned to me that Mendelsohn's accent was iffy, though I didn't notice it for some reason.

All that said, this my favorite movie this year, and I can't wait to see it again.

  12. Forrest Whitaker was terrible.

  14. Leia looked "worse" IMO because we've seen so much Leia in our lives. Harder to "fake." It looked ... only ok.

I think we could have just had some more explanation as to why his character was so psychotic. Maybe there's some info about him in Clone Wars but that show just isn't for me. I think Saw is the Maz of this movie...fans are split on wether they like this goofball new character who isn't much more than a plot device.

Just saw it, would give it a solid B+. I wasn't super hyped for these spinoff movies and was pleasantly surprised by both how much it felt like a worthy entry to the series and how much it felt like a story worth telling. The first half is a little dense for me - felt much more like what I traditionally expect from sci fi than like Star Wars - but god daaamn the last hour was awesome. One thing that really stood apart from TFA for me was it felt much more grounded in what it asked the audience to believe, aside from the random switch that Chirrut had to push it didn't seem as deus ex machina heavy as I've come to expect.

Saw's tentacle monster is really the only thing that made me scratch my head. It read his mind and then thats never brought up again and that information is never used? The only thing I can think of is it shows Saw is a madman but I feel like the ambush on the tank did a great job of showing that.

This movie was everything I love about Star Wars cranked up. The set design, costumes, creature design...all the best in the series imo. The score had its moments. It really shows that Giacchinno only had 4 months to do it. But yeah, after 7 movies its great to see a different kind of Star Wars movie about the boots on the ground. Just a straight up war movie in the Star Wars universe.

Yea, that didn't seem to do anything. It should have shown that Bhodi was legit, yet he was locked up. What was the point?

The tentacle monster had to have been something that was left on the cutting room floor.

And Leia looked bad. The way her mouth moved, in particular - it's not how real peoples' mouth move and her eyes looked odd. It looked like a character in a "Metal Gear" cutscene. I think critic Alonso Duralde put it best that the people being recreated in CGI is certainly getting better and this is proof that we're almost there. But still, we're not there.

I definitely hope they include a tentacle monster in every new Star Wars from here on out

Actually, he kind of did. He was clearly out of it when we first see him in the cell. He does snap back VERY quickly though.

Yeah, I agree that initially he was a lil messed up, but based on saw(?)'s line I assumed he wouldn't be back to it in seconds
