The other guy and I are talking about the films so this doesnt address our comments.

I think you're the guy being defensive here with this comment.

Did you read the book? Windu is the best swordsman on the council. He actually beat him. He didn't let him win. Anakin actually saved him. Not saying that Palpatine isn't brilliant and didn't milk it, but it's clear from the book and the movie that Mace actually bested him in that moment.

    You overlooked this part...

"When has he ever drawn it and gone to town on regularpeople? It makes no sense and is uncharacteristic of who Vader is."

He is wrong. There are canonical references where he does that. From ROTS, to Lords of the Sith/Tarkin, to the comics set after A New Hope. those show he does it over many years up to during events that happen in the movies. So if it does happen in Rogue One it absolutely fits with his character.

No one is dumb here. It's just someone not using all their resources and therefore coming up with incorrect conclusions.

You are discussing a character that exists outside of movies.

i don't know how canon those books are now at this point.

I haven't read it since the movie came out, so I won't argue with what it says. You may very well be right.

In the movie it is very clear Palpatine is playing victim to gain Anakin's sympathy and play on his notion of true justice through the Senate.

The problem with citing non-cinematic canon is, not only is the character overwhelmingly primarily viewed only through his movie appearances, the additional canon is subject to change at any time and crosses mediums to a degree where the dramatic demands/age of the character/circumstances/voice of the writers all range wildly. I personally don't care about the issue being discussed, as long as the film is good and makes it work, but I think that context exists.

OK well the OT is maybe the most iconic piece of media ever.

So you're not blindsided again, know that that's what people are referencing when they talk about Vader.

It's a valid point that Disney could one day go, "fuck it, let's start EVERYTHING over!" And wipe all that out. But when you say a character is X, you should at least acknowledge all that is "true" of him from where it is acknowledged as "real". Which for this particular character is various formats and writers and visions. It makes it more complex and perhaps inconsistent at times.

But even all the non cinematic examples aside, he slaughtered the Sepratist leadership at the end of ROTS. So it would not be out of character for him to do something similar in Rogue One. He may not do it and this will all be pointless.

Who is debating the iconic value of the OT? Do you bring this up as a way to say the other stuff doesn't matter? Despite the fact that the people in charge of that character value the non cinematic stuff a great deal.

And your second statement is just absurd. Vader exists outside of the movies. When he was on Rebels people talked about him and it was not referring the OT when they did. Same with the comics. Same with any books. The idea that people only reference the movies is just false. And you aren't even including the prequels? That's Vader too at the end. Do all the movies count? Or just the OT?

  9. Went for a walk today up to Powells to look for Xmas presents for my mom, they had a Kylo Ren starter pack. I grabbed it. If I like it I'll get the booster pack and see what else I need to do to feed what will be an obsession.

This is true, but if you think about the events leading up to that moment in the movie, you see Palpatine trying to sway Anakin before this pivotal scene. If Anakin remains good when Palpatine says "you must choose," Palpatine is completely defeated and we never have the OT. Too much to give up on an uncertainty for Palpatine. He's definitely playing victim to try to manipulate Anakin and it worked, but based strictly on the movie--if Anakin shows up 1 minute later or doesn't show up at all... he's done.

Here are some of the final spots and a few actual clips from the film (none are longer than 30 seconds). Obviously avoid if you're trying to not watch anything until next week:

Some lines from K-2SO and shots of Y-Wings:

A conversation between Galen Erso and Director Krennic:

The scene where they come up with the call sign:

    And the final international trailer:

Disclaimer: last one gave me chills

Not sure if it has been posted before, but here is a deleted scene from RoTS that serves as sort of a precursor to Rogue One:

And another IMAX TV spot with even more new footage:

Premiere is Saturday, so the reviews should start rolling in on Sunday. That's when I'll have to thread ban myself.
