The more these likely 'locks' pop-up and sink in, the more it's looking like this year is going to be a "looks cool on paper, but not worth the trek" years for me. So far it's a lot of cool/fun artists that are coming to my area, ones I've seen recently, or acts I just don't need to see it live. Riot tends to always throw curveballs, pull out artists nobody saw coming, etc. So it's possible I'm wrong here... But that's my feeling at the moment.
Bummed about Saosin. Probably won't go to the tour since I don't like any of the support but it would have been fun to see that album live. Maiden would've been cool too. Was kind of hoping to catch them live this year but it's not happening two days after Riot for me.
If we get something today about the announcement of the lineup announcement I'd say its possible but if not I'd say next week
Coheed announced a bunch of midwest dates in September with no Chicago. I already had some thoughts about whether they were in play but this all but confirms it
I don't think so. They're not playing anywhere too close on that, unless I missed it. The bigger problem is they'd have to squeeze it in around LTL and Shaky Knees. Bands have done it, but it's a lot of flying for three fests in a row.
Lineup has to be coming soon considering the Riot Fest sized holes in tour announcements are getting more and more glaring
Pearl Jam and Pixies playing Ohana a week after Riot makes me think they might be one of the headliners/sub headliners
I know she’s here this month, but please for the love of god can we finally get Courtney Barnett at this festival?
Pearl Jam would be a headliner that could lean into @sam_might_say's 90's college radio idea. Put them alongside the Pixies, Sugar, and some younger bands with a similar sound/vibe on Riot. Then slot Rise Against, Social Distortion, and some punk on Roots. I have no interest in Pearl Jam (understatement) but that would be a pretty killer line-up for most people, I'd imagine. And it's exactly the kind of thing Eddie would think is cool. Plus it's in Chicago. Waiting to announce until after Ohana would be justifiable too. This feels pretty likely now, TBH...
I’m actually pretty surprised that PJ is playing Ohana since Eddie made it sound like they were gonna take this year off from shows. But I’m wondering if they’re gonna do a small handful at the end of the year to break in the new drummer (whoever it is). Riot would be a great fit.
This is kind of a dumb thought but not really. I feel like…if the lineup is done/all set, which I assume it is by this point, why not just…drop it? What’s the point in waiting? It doesn’t really affect me since I live in Chicago but I’d love to know the logistics that goes into deciding when to drop the lineup each year.
i could def mess with a Pearl Jam / MCR or Panic / Tool or System line up. 3 distinct styles, but all with a certain amount of crossover 'rock in general' fans
I would love to know too! Hah. I tend to assume a lot of it has to do with headliners and the announcements other festivals are making. The bit about Riot that always throws me off is that they could just announce one or two of the headliners and let the rest wait. I don't understand why they don't do that... Or do what they used to do where it's like, a 85% complete line-up and then they add 1-2 direct support acts and a handful of midcard and openers a month or two after the initial drop.
maybe there is just something in their research that shows being the absolute last fest to announce has advantages, be the last headline and not immediately overshadowed by something else that comes the next day/week. no clue though.
Yesterday, somebody pointed out that with Tricky on the bill it makes Tool feel much more likely. Which makes perfect sense to me in terms of curation. Pearl Jam does feel more likely now but it's also very much a coin-toss (especially if they've said there won't be any shows this year; but they would very much fall into that "headliner nobody saw coming" category). And I could very much see this being a situation where people get super convinced and then it just doesn't happen. LOL If we get those two the third would probably be somebody a bit less 90s alt-rock coded, though...
