Pixies could be a “maybe” There’s a three-day gap between their Wilmington and Borderland Fest show, so hypothetically they could fit Riot in on the 18th… But that would be brutal travel-wise
Considering most of them aren't on tour-tour, I don't think it rules them out in the way it normally would. But it does make them way-way less likely. I'm thinking this year we have a wild card that's unique to Riot Fest compared to the rest of the US-based festivals. Sugar is in the mix too! And I'm sure a few others that I'm forgetting about at the moment... EDIT: Rise Against and Alkaline Trio feel pretty likely as well.
Riot's email today indicated lineup announcement is getting closer. Doesn't mean anything really but it does make me think we're gearing up for an April drop again! As a sidenote: Wondering if Riot will continue their tradition of having a token Red Scare band on the bill. American Steel would be a really fun, early day "get." Would pair nicely on the same stage as Social D or the Lawrence Arms (assuming they're on the bill).
Weezer Arena tour with the shins and Silversun Pickups opening, bummer for me as I was really hoping for Silversun Pickups this year, Though the Chicago date is on September 22, so I could just stick around for an extra day
The Shins are a band I’m surprised haven’t played Riot. Although they haven’t really toured much in the past decade
I don’t dislike the shins however I would pick Broken Bells 10 times out of 10, They just groove that hard lol
I’m not opposed to having all the 2022 headliners again with a different undercard. That set of headliners is really strong and the only way I’d find 3 repeat headliners acceptable. It could be something like: Friday - Nine Inch Noize Saturday - The Misfits/The Sex Pistols Sunday - MCR
I'm doubling down on my guess that one of the headliners is somebody none of us are considering or thinking about.
Bummer. Was kind of hoping for them for Riot. I'd like to see them but probably not enough to go to Tinley.
has anyone here bought one of the vip packages for riot before? are they worth it? what's the experience like?
At this point, VIP isn't worth it unless there are large pockets in the day where you don't want to see any music and you want shade or a spot to sit. The lines for food and beverages earlier in the day aren't too bad but by the end of the night it's rough back there so the benefit of that goes away. The food options are also pretty generic (e.g., pizza, burgers/hot dogs, fries) except for Island Noodle. The section is also way in the back of the venue so it feels pretty "isolated" from everything else. To my mind the only real benefits to that are early entry, the air-conditioned bathrooms, and having a spot to sit in the shade. For me, Deluxe VIP is very worth it. Open bar is nice but not the primary driver for us. Between my partner and I we'll probably have 4-8 alcoholic beverages each day but they also have energy drinks, water, electrolyte-type drinks, and such which we also drink throughout the day. Annoyingly it's only good in this area so you if you decide you want a drink and you're anywhere other than the main stage? You need to trek back or spend the $ to buy something. The viewing areas at each stage are awesome if you want to get "close enough" for most bands and not stress about crowds; really good if you want to bounce between stages all day, catch partial sets, etc. They do tend to fill-up for certain artists so you might need to get there just before a set starts later in the day but this tends to be rare if you plan accordingly. The main stage viewing area is pretty good for most of the day but for the headliners it tends to get packed. Similar to Deluxe, it has shaded areas and seating (but people tend to camp out here all day so seats can be hard to come by - the shade is good though). The food options are pretty basic here too but works in a pinch for me (though my partner is vegan; she wasn't a fan of those options in there). The A/C bathrooms, locker access, and such are all nice too. But you can get those with deluxe. A lot of it depends on how you want to spend your day. I tend to load up and see as much music as possible without caring too much about getting right up-front. So the viewing spots are the biggest perk for me. My partner is a lot less aggressive about that than me so it's also nice for her - she can go back and chill for a bit while I'm out doing my thing and we have a locked in meeting spot/homebase for the weekend. The open bar is nice but unless you're drinking an absurd amount each day there's no way that pays for itself without the other stuff. LOL
Press release for the new album says Sublime has a few other things planned to celebrate S/T… Wouldn’t hate that as an album play!
I wonder if this will be one of those years where we don't get huge headliners like last year, but a really solid mid tier. My final wild guess is: The Strokes-Korn-Pierce The Veil LCD Soundsystem-Death Cab For Cutie-Hayley Williams-Third Eye Blind Sex Pistols-M.I.A.-Sublime-The Prodigy-Bright Eyes-Santigold
If it weren't a potential album play I wouldn't even be thinking about them, TBH. But it would make sense. Wouldn't be shocked if they basically did a day that was a mini-Me Gusta Festival. Pennywise, the Interrupters, Long Beach Dub Allstars, HR, and Codefendants don't have conflicting dates and are "Riot-friendly" I think. Kinda hope they do something different than that but wouldn't be shocked if that's what we wind up with if they're on the bill. In looking all this up, BTW, I discovered that BrewHaHa looks to have been dropped as producer of those festivals. The name isn't on the promo materials anymore and it's not on their web site. Either that or they're doing the cowardly, shit thing and being a "silent" partner.
Has someone comprised an updated list of headline level acts who have never played (or at least headlined) the festival before? This is my attempt at it, a general list and does not factor in who is available/not for this year nor does it have limitations other than fitting in broad categories of either rock/alternative/metal and currently being an active band. The pool is not that huge honestly, at least from what I was able to come up with. Who did I miss? The Strokes The Killers Tool Paramore LCD Soundsystem Metallica Muse Linkin Park Vampire Weekend Depeche Mode Arctic Monkeys Red Hot Chili Peppers Guns and Roses Pearl Jam Radiohead Twenty One Pilots Korn Oasis Gorillaz Sleep Token Deftones
Panic at the disco if they count since they did A show All the dwp-esquires metal headliners: shinedown, bring me the horizon, pantera, disturbed, A7X, Iron Maiden, limp bizkit
I think a lot of these guys are out already though. Or, 'theoretically' out either having a Chicago show close enough to the festival, or already doing Louder Than Life and Shaky Knees. The outs I can think of are The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Muse, Korn, Gorillaz. That does leave a ton of your suggestions, though.
