Run the Jewels is the only one. They've had hip-hop close out Radical/Rise obviously but... Only one act has closed out Riot. But TBH, I don't think that matters? Hip-hop has never been the focus of the festival, nor do I think it should be. I've always preferred they stick to booking to their aesthetic rather than forcing it to fit some sort of genre quota each year. And yeah, having Lolla and Summer Smash probably takes out a bunch of possible artists but Riot could always book whoever that might be if they don't blow up too.
I agree. I like hip hop and I like what Riot brings from the genre to the festival. But from what I have seen at Lolla, I definetly wont like if they being the hip hop Lolla/Summer Smash crowd to Riot. Like its cool they had Post Malone and Tyler The Creator before they blew up, but their fanbase nowadays wont do it for me at Riot.
FWIW, that's part of a bigger giveaway ("Q101 Fest Fest" they're calling it). They're giving away tickets to a bunch of festivals around the country and if you qualify for those trips then you win a GA ticket to Riot Fest. It runs through this week. I don't think this means anything one way or another, really.
Yeah, if I didn’t live in Chicago and was catching them elsewhere, I would probably be less worried about how many nights they are playing. Although as you mention, the more nights they play, the more bands to play on their stage. I do think it will be cool to be at their last non-hometown show though.
I don’t think they need to get the hip hop Lolla and Summer Smash are booking, but nabbing some of the more “alternative” (for lack of a better word) hip hop acts like Denzel Curry, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, JPEGMAFIA, Vince Staples, etc. would be cool/fun.
What day of the week did they start doing the teasing last year, with the cakes and harpist/cellist and whatnot?
Last year they teased the day before on 05/15, which was a Monday (the day after moms day) and announced Tuesday, 05/16.
I’ve been feeling like it’s actually going to be next week. They pushed the fest back a week this year and they have very little “presents” advertising to do next week.
Oh god don't get me excited. As much fun as this would be at Riot Fest, I want it in a 300 cap room where I will feel death is impending.
Thalia Hall shared that Blood Brothers post on their Instagram story with a smirking emoji. I’m not sure they’re a lock yet
Nada Surf announcing a new album tomorrow. Since they’re playing WWWY, I’d assume they’ll be touring in the fall and would make a great add for Riot
the only reason it was pushed a week was to get off of Mexican Independence Day and the nightmare it brought to that area. (traffic was horrible) Don’t think it will effect when the lineup drops
I’m assuming that the lineup won’t be released tomorrow since we haven’t heard anything yet, but I would love to be wrong!
I understand why they did it. But that’s why I also explained it with the seemingly completely open schedule they have next week as well.
It is only one less show. I may be wrong, but I don’t think that has ever been a tell for when they are going to announce.
