Wasn't No Doubt exclusive to Coachella this year? I mean, Gwen is playing bigger festivals than Riot later this year as a solo act
Slayer too, closing side stage in 2014 and headliner in 2019 and 2024. I know circumstances are different as in 2019 was their last tour and 2024 their reunion. Maybe not growth in popularity per se.
has there been anyone besides Queens of the stone age & jawbreaker who went the opposite direction? (full headliner to slightly lower on the card). not sure if morrissey counts since his 2nd time was headlining the mini-day
Im checking past lineups. Flaming Lips went from closing side stage in 2014 to headliners in 2016 to side stage closers again in 2019/2021
Also not sure about Death Cab, as they were coheadliners in 2023, but The Postal Service was the main headliner (?) Sorry for 3 posts in a row
I don't think they explicitly said they were exclusive. I just find it hard to believe that they'd go from that $10-million payday to whatever Riot is offering them (which is substantial and something most bands would kill for but to me, the fact that they received that amount tells me they really don't want to do shows). Rise Against technically counts except 2012 was a smaller festival in general. And, it hasn't happened yet, but I'd imagine if Jane's Addiction, the Offspring, or Bikini Kill ever came back that they wouldn't close out the day.
I mean, wasn’t technically The Flaming Lips a co-headliner in 2016? I thought they were co-headlining with Ween
Ween headlined Denver but not Chicago.. I think Flaming Lips were rumored to be a replacement for Soundgarden One of my favorite days of Riot with the Specials.. but Jimmy Eat World & Nofx probably had the biggest crowds of the day/night
that day has one of my 'hindsight is 20/20' moments becasue i left the specials (from the very front, as my then-wife camped for it) after only 15 mins to get a good spot for glassjaw.. while GJ is a top tier favorite band, if i had known i would be seeing them 4 more times since then, but that was my only chance to see the specials, i would have stayed for the whole thing.
Soundgarden at Riot would’ve been insane. Was there any hints that implied they were supposed to play?
Not hotly speculated but… Ignite and Death By Stereo are both out. Dates in Canada all of Riot weekend. That also takes out Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Soundgarden was just a rumor that was floated around.. no idea how valid that was.. but Flaming Lips definitely were a replacement headliner in 2016 from what I remember Kraftwerk is in Germany the week before Riot, I'd be shocked they come to the states without announcing a tour yet the Selecter are headlining Supernova a week before Riot.. not sure how long they are staying in the states but I guess that puts them in play,.. I MEAN WE NEED SOME MORE FUCKING SKA AT RIOT
Hear me out… he’s probably too big, but what about Childish Gambino? I feel like he could somewhat fit that mold of hip hop, but I could be way off.
After having the Foo Fighters and MCR I'm starting to feel like the group of artists that I would categorize as "too big for Riot Fest" is way thinner than I initially thought
I really hope that the lineup comes out next week just so I can stop seeing dumb posts from people that seem to think there are literally 0 bands left that could play. Someone on Reddit just said this: “I have to say with every band that gets posted as being out I have been thinking are there any bands left to play this festival? Them cancelling at this point would make sense.”
Every year around this time there's a bunch of tours that get announced that rule bands out. And it gets real weird when a bunch of them are potential headliners... It's happened in this thread. But I think the difference is that in here we tend to tack on a "but there must be somebody we're not thinking of!" Or there's somebody people say isn't big enough to headline, so they aren't speculated, and they wind up being a perfectly serviceable headliner because of how they paired the artists up for that day. Riot's always got something up their sleeves. And it's really weird that people don't see that at this point. EDIT: But this year seems much worse outside of here. Haha. I'm hoping for Tuesday because I'll still be stateside. LOL
In 2021 like 75% people said RF won't happen. Since that year there is a big chunk saying that RF won't happen because of community/location/commities related issues and it's still going strong. I'm not going to worry about RF not happening this year because some bands announced tours. It's become a "cry wolf" thing. Next year someone will post about RF getting canceled because of bees lol
