if Riot where to book Bad Optix for their first ever live show, where would you slot them in the schedule?
Friday was unique and not indicative of anything around what the reaction would be to booking more contemporary acts. They definitely do need to break out of the mold a bit. They're limiting their growth.
I'd push mosh with a bunch of 40 year olds to the 25th (album was '97, video was '98) anniversary of this fuckin gem right here.
The Beths being on the Death Cab/Postal Service tour definitely leads more credence to them playing. I hope they do play, they are just a fun band live and nothing wrong with that at Riot! (It's also why I'd love JBREKKIE to play, she's just a lot of fun on stage)
Double post but if Paramore is headlining this, which signs are pointing to that being the case, this would be my first time ever seeing them. I did not love the newest album but I still feel like they are a band I need to see *at least* once in my lifetime.
I know Interpol was discussed, but with the routing of the Pumpkins’ summer tour, it looks like STP could be in play too
I think this is the biggest hurdle. Granted, I don't have my finger on the pulse of hip hop, but even some of the new wave of emo/underground/whatever rappers probably aren't big enough to headline a day. And then I feel like most of the people who would move the needle hit up Lolla/P4K. What about Chance? Local kid, used to be a bigger name but kinda fell off? I think he might be able to handle a day, with the right support, obvs. But again, just a typical RF attendee talkin' (typin') here.
I’m not just talking about the overcrowding and crowd surging. more so just a different audience with different sensibilities of show going behavior. For example I would love to see Lil Durk or (and I know she’s not a rap artist I’m just making a point) Olivia Rodrigo headline one day of riot fest, but I could easily see their fans either trying to stop people from moshing the whole day or moshing in a way that is oldheads would consider “wrong” and piss us off. Or like standing at the very front and loud talking through a soft set from American Football or Dashboard Confessional or something like that. Riot Fest is very much in a “damned if you do, Damned if you don’t” situation. They need to start injecting new blood into the top lines of the lineup while still feeling like Riot Fest.
Chance the Rapper could definitely headline Riot Fest now, he has fallen off soooooo much in the past few years (people even speculate if he could still be top 8 at Lolla) but I think his ego would get in the way and he would not want to headline a "lesser" festival that is not Lolla. (I could be way wrong but just my assumption haha)
I didnt love the new album neither. But they add extra energy to those songs live and would be down to see them for the 5th time, specially headlining Riot, as they were the main reason I went to Riot in 2017
I see what you mean and agree that they need new, exciting young acts to keep from going stale. RE: Friday '22, I think MCR is a huge draw and it was a long time coming, but I think it's just a younger audience who hasn't been to many shows and had been basically stuck inside for three years. I didn't know the "etiquette" when I was a 15-19 year old at Warped or whatever so I think while yes, they need to embrace a younger crowd and generation, the new kids will figure it out while being kind of annoying to the old geezers like us, just like we used to be. Circle of life.
not who you asked, but im in the same boat as @ItsAndrew . i missed them as i was seeing MIA at another stage, well technically caught the last song as a passerby walking from MIA to jawbreaker
Fuzzbubble.. what ever happened to them asked no one ever Although I'd go see a Fuzzbubble, Flickerstick, Coward reunion tour
There was a brief point in time where I think Tyler the Creator would've worked out as Riot Fest headliner, but he's too big now. Chance wouldn't work just because his music even at his best doesn't have the right energy. I could see them trying to book like Jpegmafia or Danny Brown (not as headliners but those would be cool additions to the fest).
I thought Tyler would be a good fit for Riot (he played Denver in 2016). I could still see him playing, tbh
TtC is a good call. I agree he's probably too big now - maybe right after Flower Boy came out? But maybe on a year where he's not on an album cycle he might do it.
I’d say this year would be good since he hasn’t had shows and it’s been two years since Call Me If You Get Lost dropped. Although, I feel like he might be dropping an album this year, if he keeps up his “album every two years” pattern
At some point I could see Post Malone playing, specially as he played in 2015 (I think it was 2015). But same case as Tyler, he is too big for Riot now. Although he played Summer Smash last year, which was at Douglass Park too
