Looks like Greta Van Fleet played Northerly Island in September 2021 which I think would give them more credence to get a headlining spot, but that is just my assumption.
Greta Van Fleet would actually be a really good choice for a counter-programming headliner against My Chem or Misfits.
Agnostic Front and Sick Of It All both out. Co-headlining tour hits Chicago in May and has west coast dates all throughout Riot weekend
Would be curious to see how many actual tickets they sold at that show. I'm looking at the list of artists playing there and it seems to vary between "makes sense for a huge place" (Phoebe Bridgers, My Morning Jacket, Alicia Keys) to "seems kinda big for that band" (TEB/TBS, Deftones, David Gray, Head and the Heart). Capacity at the show in Peoria, IL is ~11k. There looks to be floor seats available and a decent amount of resale all over the venue. Looks to be a similar situation in a few different venues too. If Riot booked them as a headliner, I think it's a fuck-up. But they would be a solid second stage closer in terms of draw. Probably about the same as MGK, maybe a bit more/less depending.
That venue has a lawn that they open up for bigger shows but don’t use for the smaller ones. Plenty of bands that play there don’t headline at Riot Fest.
Sacred Rose looks cool - might try to go whatever day Kamasi is playing. I doubt there was too much potential crossover with Riot there, but there's a bunch I was assuming would hit Lolla.
I don't think the question is really whether GVF is big enough to headline, but more about whether Riot would be willing to put them there. Riot headliners are kind of whatever Riot wants them to be. I mean Flaming Lips haven't even sold out Riviera next month but they've headlined, Weezer hasn't sold out their Aragon show, etc. Yet MGK would easily sell out Aragon but didn't get the spot. It's more based on optics as far as I can tell and for that reason I don't think GVF will be the 3rd headliner, even if they play.
I probably wouldn't do 3 days of this, but if the right group of bands play the same day I would be interested in this.
Great point! "Optics" is maybe not the exact word I would use, but Riot definitely considers the way everything will look on paper as well as in practice. Legacy matters. And I don't see them handing a headlining slot over to a band in such a way that it could be perceived as trend-chasing, just trying to sell tickets, etc. Exhibit A: Not only did MGK not headline last year, but he was billed under the Pixies. That being said, GVF doesn't seem like the type of band to say "we need to headline or else we don't play!" So I feel like they'll be on the bill in the 2nd or 3rd from the top position.
am i excited that i just bought great seats for that Flogging molly, interrupeter, tiger army tour? YES am i bummed that 2 tickets to this show cost about the same as 1 3-day riot ticket? ALSO YES riot continuing to prove its the best bang for your buck possible in the live music industry
Doesn't seem like it's quite their "scene." I get them being billed under most of these acts given the festival's overall vibe.
they could be part of a 'headline by committee" with some 2 or 3 way combination of any of these: bauhaus, paramore, 311, yea yea yeahs, greta van fleet, and im sure others could be included. my big wish for 3rd headliner is that Muse has had their stock drop enough that they could be in riots price range. their new album is out Aug 26th, so post-lolla, pre-riot. they would be a great fit, i think itll happen one year, if not this one;
I keep saying this, but I'm convinced that's the way Sunday's gonna go. I think it's likely one of them will be Bauhaus. And I could totally see Bauhaus/311 or Bauhaus/Paramore with GVF first on the second line too.
Well, if we look at the context clues in the video for their latest single "Compliance", they could be going the way of Dicky Barrett. So their stock may drop but not sure if Riot will be buying the dip.
I mean, they booked Morrissey so... Not sure if an anti-vax stance would be enough to steer them clear of Muse.
i dont see anything that would indicate he is anti-vax, thats a wild accusation to throw at him, haha
After reading the lyrics to "Compliance," I can see how one might jump to the conclusion that it's referring to vaccine and/or mask mandates given the context of the outside world... Or you can acknowledge that Muse writes lyrics for people who use the word "sheeple" unironically, accept that the songs mean absolutely nothing in any context because of how vague the words are, and just appreciate the cool riffs and bass lines when they decide to play rock music. That's where I'm at with them. Haha.
Not that I want Greta Van Fleet to play, but this stage line-up would be pretty fun and make total sense: Greta Van Fleet / Tenacious D / The Hives / Sheer Mag / Local H / The Dirty Nil "Rock with a capital 'R' but make it Riot Fest."
I want Bully to play. They played three sold out shows at Empty Bottle last year and are due back at Riot. They would be a fun mid day act, especially with their newest album. Or Torres who also released a great album last year and has a rock vibe. Wednesday would also be really fun at Riot. Also Charly Bliss are releasing a new album this year IIRC and they would be a lot of fun at Riot. And hopefully this is the year we get Bartees Strange while he is hot.
Bully and Charly Bliss would both be great! Unrelated: I really hope we wind up getting the Go-Go's too! EDIT: Bartees strange would be sick too!
