I feel like quite a few of the drop-outs from 2021 are likely. Given Fucked Up's tour routing, I don't necessarily see them coming back to Chicago so soon... But who knows? Faith No More feels less likely because of Mike's health. It's a way out, but I get the sense that he's dealing with some bigger issues. Hope he's working toward resolving them!
Eve 6 is playing Chicago May 10. So, this might count them out? I’d hate for that to be the case because of their Riot Twitter need but who knows lol
It's 130 days apart, so definitely not an issue... We are the Union is opening the first half of the tour, and that's a band a lot of people think will be at Riot.. so they aren't out either also, this would be a very very fringe Riot booking.. but Fleet Foxes are out (Josh Tillman was in the band at one point) .. August 3 in Chicago, plus are ending their European tour a week before Riot so probably taking a break
Not an issue timing-wise, but it kinda depends on what their plans are for the rest of the year. They have a new album coming out so I'd imagine they'll be doing another run in the fall. Riot could easily fit into those plans. With bands like them (who aren't really full-time anymore) it's usually more of a "Are they even wanting to play shows?" kinda thing. Like, I'm pretty sure the spring run will be Jawbreaker's only shows this year. Just because they aren't hugely active (by design, I'm sure--gotta keep that demand up).
They could just do a whole fest that has everyone on that bill, and all the 90’s bands that Max talked about meeting when they first started getting big on Twitter lol (Spin Doctors, Third Eye Blind, etc.) Also, a Patton Oswalt stand-up set
Probably wouldn’t happen for several reasons, but Mike Kennerty from AAR is also producing and playing on the new Screeching Weasel album. He said on Mike Herrera’s podcast that they would probably play some shows this year too. He also said AAR will be playing some shows this year too. Seems unlikely they both play, but it’s logistically possible at the moment.
All of that sounds like my personal hell with the exception of Eve 6 and the Patton set. Haha. God, that whole crop of pop-rock bands were terrible... I think it might be an age thing but all I associate that music with is my mom's mini-van and the "mix" station playing them alongside Jewel and Savage Garden. It's the epitome of watered down. I was about to post that Ben is probably on Riot Fest's "no book" list but Screeching Weasel was on a Riot Fest presents show in 2016. For the festival itself, though, I kinda feel like they wouldn't book them because it wouldn't be worth the headache... I'm fully expecting All-American Rejects to be on the bill when it drops, though, given that they were originally meant to play last year and have a new album coming soon.
LOL. Yeah I kinda put all those bands together too. I think of it as the wave of “90’s adult alt rock groups/90’s alt rock groups that were huge but made no cultural impact.” So like, Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Soul Asylum… and more. Haha
In regards to a new AAR record probably not this year because Tyson is acting and Nick Wheeler does songwriting in Nashville I think. And then Mike has his stuff too. Mike said they want to play some shows that make sense and kind of wait out things out.
Well, what's interesting is that a few of those artists have had a pretty major impact on certain segments of the music world. The last year or two that I had a subscription to Alternative Press, it felt like every band that looked like All Time Low/the Maine was citing Third Eye Blind as a key influence. And the number of 90s-sounding pop-punk bands talking about the Gin Blossoms in the 2010s was pretty astounding too... But it all felt like it was more some of the key singles than the band's collective discographies if that makes sense. It's also weird to see Soul Asylum and Goo Goo Dolls lumped in with those bands giving their histories. But there they are. Also odd how the Lemonheads escaped the whole thing by being just under the radar enough. I can hang with a few tracks by some of them ("Good" by Better Than Ezra is an all-timer for me) and I definitely fuck with Goo Goo Dolls right up until "Dizzy Up the Girl"... But by and large? I really can't be bothered with that whole segment of bands.
Eve 6 is not a draw for Riot Fest's crowd, so their headlining show will not impact whether they're able to play the festival.
I think pretty much any band that played on alternative rock radio in the mid to late 90's is a borderline draw for Riot to book, plus Eve 6 is touring with a ska punk band that is somewhat likely to play Riot this year so there's that too
We really should consolidate all the comments about whether a band has the vibe and/or draw for Riot and give a prize to whoever performs best. 1 point for predicting a disagreed-on booking, half- or quarter- points for non-bookings, 2 points for correctly saying they'll be on p4k/lolla instead
What I meant was Eve 6's inclusion on this festival will likely not sway a single person to go. So it doesn't matter if they do their own headlining show, because it won't cannibalize any Riot Fest business. And yes, they will play the festival because both sides are committed to the bit at this point.
i thought of a similar betting where everyone creates a mock lineup with an agreed upon number of bands (90?) and just simple "who got the most correct" once the poster drops. everyone is guarenteed at least 5 correct, haha
Screeching Weasel played in 2013. Both times that they played riot fest (2009 and 2013), Ben didn’t really talk much and just played songs the whole time. Which is most definitely for the best.
Woah, I forgot they played in 2013! Which was after the Austin, TX bullshit. I don't know why, but I thought that all went down after their last Riot performance. Time is confusing, apparently.
Japandroids cancelled their Shaky Knees appearance in May. Given that they were meant to be performing Celebration Rock in full at that festival I'm really hoping they have an album-play tour in the works and they're pushing it out a few months. They would be a fantastic late afternoon addition to Riot, particularly with that album play! (And I kinda feel like, at this stage in the band's lifecycle they would be a better fit there than Pitchfork though that's also a possibility.)
I mean, I'm pretty sure Pitchfork is happening this year but they sure have been very vague and quiet on when and if.
Tony Hawk is doing a 3 days skate/music/gaming fest in vegas. only a few bands per day but he knows how to make 'em count! Circle Jerks arent listed here but they are listed on the schedule, so not 100% sure why they arent shown (im guessing they are supposed to be where downhill jam is.) Also cool that all bands are doing at least an hour, with headliner doing 90 min.
