I agree with all of the above. That being said, an Avril booking would at least make some sense because she does have ties to pop punk music. Kelly on the other hand does not, despite what they play at emo nites. Kelly was my first concert ever and she was great, so I would watch her set, but she would just be so out of place.
I definitely wasn't trying to downplay the impact she had in terms of being an artist people got into early. I was literally thinking of it in more of a "people got into music with the intention of sounding like them." And just to be really clear here, I wouldn't really care if they booked her. I just like analyzing this shit and contemplating whether or not these things might realistically happen. And why/why not. This is true music nerd analytics. Hah. What ties does she have to pop-punk? Beyond the image on album #1, the one track, and having Gob as her backing band for a few years (which tied to said-image)... I can't think of anything before the new pivot back to her old aesthetic and writing an album of Barker-core pop-punk. Am I missing something?
Oh I just measnt her aesthetic was pop-punk esque, both back then and now. I don't mean any specific ties.
My (Pittsburgh) date for the AFI tour got moved from March to November, so depending on what happens to the show at the Riviera Theatre should give us a solid in or out for them
Her first three albums had plenty of pop punk tunes. My Happy Ending, Don't Tell Me, Runaway, Skater Boi, Losing My Grip, I Can Do Better.....I actually feel silly listing out song titles because I would categorize those three albums as just pop punk. People who were fans of Avril in those first 10 years were also fans of Blink, NFG, Simple Plan etc. I don't know why you're fighting reality so hard lol
shes has also had plenty of riot-esque openers over the years - simple plan, bowling for soup, gob, autopolot off, and even her upcoming tour has Grandson and mod sun opening. i am absolutely indifferent about her/her music but i think she fits better than people are giving her for but at the same time, maybe shes is juuust on the other side of the invisible line on the pop side of things that riot hasnt /wont cross yet. i think its 50/50. but also, i always thought slipknot was juuust on the other side of the invisible nu-metal line but they got they invite, so maybe riot is expanding their bubble little by little every year, or maybe they were in a pinch, who knows, haha
I'm not really "fighting" it. I guess I legit don't hear any of those songs as "pop-punk" with one, maybe two exceptions. It all just kinda sounds like VH-1 pop-rock circa 2002 to me. (Which is one of the reasons why I like talking about stuff like this. It's good to get out of my own head/my own experience.) So maybe I'm wrong about what it looks like on paper, but I feel like it's kinda the same thing as when people say various nu-metal acts might fit (Disturbed, Papa Roach) where like maybe on paper it could "fit" but in practice? Not so much. Despite what these posts might seem, I'm not hugely invested in any of it. She'll play or she won't, and if she plays it'll just mean fewer conflicts. I just think it's interesting to break it down/think about it. Fair point about the openers too. But your thing about the "invisible line" I think is what I'm trying to get at. It's an intangible thing, where she just doesn't fit the "formula." Slipknot is one of maybe like, three of the bigger "nu metal" acts that do kinda fit (all of whom have played in the past). The Slipknot booking last year felt kinda like a last minute replacement so who knows how it'll play out. I do kinda hope they start booking some of the newer bands in a similar vein that are on the come-up (Vein.fm, for example).
I think this nailed it. I bet if we told people at the very first Riot Fests that 10 years later a Hip Hop band would headline it would make them mad. Riot has had acts that lend more into pop before: Fitz and the Tanturms, Hippo Campus, Imagine Dragons, Bleachers, Young The Giant, fun., Neon Trees, Tegan and Sara, they keep expanind their bubble without loosing their punk essence. Edit: I deleted Village People, but added Neon Trees and Tegan and Sara after checking their line ups
Never noticed that, my apologies also, I'm personally done with this Avril talk.. if it happens, it happens
the odd one that ive never understood (and rarely see mentioned) is Jake Bugg. maybe my perception is off about him but i thought he was like a less popular ed sheeran type.
Personally I think having headliners like The National and The Prodigy, or bands like Father John Misty and Fitz and the Tantrums is more odd than if they book Avril While I was checking all their line-ups that one stick out to me too lol, I totally forgot he was a big thing and even dated Cara DeLevgine, and now noone remembers him
I remember reading articles about Jake Bugg 10 years ago where people were predicting he'd be headlining Glastonbury in a few years time. Ironically I think that article was the last time I heard someone mention his name until now.
I like Jake Bugg but a lot of his hype has drastically died down and I rarely hear anyone talk about him these days
im sure they are probably a lock for Lolla, but ive enjoyed everything ive seen from maneskin so far (which isnt much). their SNL performance looks like they have a fun live show energy.
The Cult announced a spring tour with no chicago date. very in play and would be a great mid day main stage if the Bauhaus reunion were to become a thing
Wolf Alice is skipping Chicago on their next tour, and will be in Europe during Lolla & potentially Pitchfork if it moves back to early July.. Khruangbin are skipping Chicago as well, but I'm pretty sure they are playing Lolla
They only announced like 12 dates, probably doing an amphitheater tour this summer with a band a band like STP also Bauhaus reunited in 2019
