Courtney Barnett just rescheduled her Toronto show to September 14, which puts her in the radius for Riot Fest weekend!
Sick! I have tickets to her current tour, but I'd love a festival set that leans a little more toward the energy of the first two full-lengths.
Every mock has Avril I do not see Avril at Riot.. it makes no sense at all, but could totally see Paramore or even Courtney Barnett playing opposite Misfits
Avril is not playing Riot, wasn't she playing Christian music like 2 or 3 years ago... I just don't see it And if it happens.. huge gigantic font IF Do we go from a Corey Taylor-MGK feud last year, to a Danzig-Avril feud this yea.. oh joy /s Are people thinking this because she's playing WWWY.. there's a bunch of bands on that lineup that will never play Riot
I think it's because she wore bondage pants and released that "Sk8er Boi" song in 2002... And is now trying to ape that sound again. Which is why she's on WWY... Which is a completely different aesthetic and draw than Riot Fest. Current aesthetics aside? She's a full-on pop act. She'll do Lolla, if anything. And I really don't understand why people seem to be convinced she's playing (or why they'd even want another culture vulture like MGK to play). I would be less shocked if they booked Limp Bizkit or Korn. That would be rad! They were phenomenal when they played in 2017.
Korn Untouchables 20 year album play at Riot let's go Or wait two years and book them for a 30 year Self-Titled album play
the Black Keys & Band of Horses are out.. July17 in Chicago the Marias are playing with Halsey on Jul 3 in Chicago, so they are probably out Not sure if they were ever really in, but just for the record also Summerfest is probably announcing their lineup relatively soon, none of those bands are considered out I also agree Peaches is probably in, not a lock since she could add dates after the European leg of the tour.. but pretty close to one
I could see any of the first three Korn albums being an album play at some point. Not so much anything after that though, TBH. Those aren't anywhere near as "iconic" or broad reaching.
Agreed. I think Untouchables was huge in its time, but I don’t think it left an impact as big as their first three albums, tbh
Not sure playing Christian music disqualifies someone from playing Riot, ie: Underoath or The Devil Wears Prada lol Im not saying she is playing and tbh don't think Riot will spend lots of money on here, but I think that after booking Village People nothing is off the books for Riot, and I would say she is a better fit than lets say Father John Misty.
After seeing Jerry Lee Lewis and Morrisey on the lineup for the past few years I doubt anything will really disqualify you from playing RF.
I mean, most Korn albums up to a certain point had a certain level of popularity/notoriety upon release. But when people think "important albums," Untouchables is just beyond that scope for them. Album plays are generally albums that your average person who might be peripherally into/stoked about an artist would be able to get pretty stoked on. And I don't think that one's it for a Riot Fest set... Even if it is full of bangers.
My thinking around the Avril Lavigne thing is sort of like... The inverse of Liz Phair. Liz Phair is a perfect fit for the festival. Her whole aesthetic and what she represents is fully aligned. And the vast majority of her output is in the realm of early alt-rock/indie or whatever. She was considered to be a pretty important, boundary pressing artist in her day that had an impact. She does have that one album where she tried going for straight Top 40 that's kinda "meh." But that's the outlier. Another example I might point to would be the Flaming Lips. They have that one novelty single. But that's not why people care about them at this point, for the most part... With Avril, it's kind of the opposite. Her aesthetic is/was surface-level, didn't shift any paradigms or have a lasting impact. She has a grand total of one "pop-punk" song and a bunch of pretty okay, acoustic guitar pop-rock songs that are very much "of an era." When the aesthetic didn't fit her anymore, she ditched it. Now it seems like it might sell, so she's back at it. I just find it very hard to believe that she would (a) want to play Riot Fest over something like Lollapalooza or (b) that Riot Fest would think she's worth the money she would want given how badly they'd be mocked for booking her. Then again, they could always put her on the same stage as GWAR and Eve 6 and turn it into a joke that everybody involved would probably be okay with. There we go. That's the cheat code.
Listen this is the festival that booked fucking MGK last year so I wouldn't be surprised about booking anyone lol
You know what? Rules are off the table this year. You’re right. At this point, I think anything can go In that case CANNIBAL CORPSE
I stand by that being a very calculated push on the artist's part and the festival going "Eh, fine. It'll work, I guess." Wouldn't be surprised if he undervalued himself to get on that bill, TBH. That's a pretty old industry trick. He was so aligned with hip-hop it really behooved him to try and get out to do a bunch of those festivals (which were booked before the album dropped and they learned he didn't really need it after all)... Avril isn't in a position where she needs to do that. EDIT: That is to say that people already view her as a person who writes and plays songs on guitar. And because of her image on that first record, she's still associated as being "punk" by some people. It's all marketing and image. And it was clearly very effective.
Roots Stage on Sunday night: 311, Michelle Branch, GWAR, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Cannibal Corpse, and a surprise set from Garth Brooks performing only Chris Gaines songs.
While I understand why Riot wouldn’t book Avril, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did either. I think she would do Lolla instead, but I think it could work if Riot decided they wanted to do it. Even though a lot of the early Avril aesthetic was a label thing, I think she influenced a lot of girls at the time who are now involved in music scenes or making music. A band like Pale Waves jumps out to me. Same thing for Kelly Clarkson. Emo Nite during Riot played Since You’ve Been Gone, for example. I think a lot of Avril and Kelly songs, even though were big pop songs at the time, they still crossed over or were a gateway for a lot women (and others) that are now probably voices in the general Riot world.
