Do people really think Riot Fest is even remotely concerned about WWYF? It's such a different demo. I'm pretty convinced that the cross-section of people who might want to attend both, and would have to choose between the two, in a given year pretty much exists in discussion threads like this on the Internet.
It would be cool if they book Green day in 2024, so its 30 years of Dookie and/or 20 of American Idiot. I know they played Dookie in full at Reading and Leeds for the 20 years and in Spain for the 25 years. America needs a show for it!
Dookie was recorded in 1993, so 2023 could technically work as a 30 year.. then again, I don't think after 2020 that years even count anymore so I'd be happy if it's this year also, like mentioned below.. Riot doesn't always ask for album plays because of specific years/anniversaries
I was low-key joking, haha. But I do think the only demographic on the “in between” of choosing Riot or WWWY is us
I mean, Riot has pulled off album plays on years that aren’t affiliated with a particular anniversary (I.E. Built To Spill playing Keep It Like A Secret in 2017 despite it being released in 2019) so playing Dookie this year or next wouldn’t be a stretch
I figured you were! But I've seen it in a bunch of other spots where people weren't joking... And seriously think that any other major festival is in competition with that thing. Much like Riot caters to the 30-45 year old punk/indie-leaning music nerds who spend as much time getting into new "buzz bands" as they do revisiting the favorites, WWYF caters to the 25-35 year old former Warped attendees who now have disposable income and stopped going to shows/caring about the "scene" with any sort of frequency. (Doesn't apply to the people on this web site, really, but out in the wild? That is 100% the demo.)
You are right, and when they played it at Reading and Leeds it was 2013 so it was on the 19 years (had to check on that), so anything is possible! Even with a regular Green Day set I would be happy!
They specifically played it at Reading & Leeds because the album was recorded in 1993.. it was released in February of 1994, long after they had finished recording then again, the album was called Dookie and maybe they just didn't give a shit
Green Day headlines all three nights. Friday is Uno. Saturday Dos. Sunday Tre. Nothing else. No hits. Just those albums… …and King For A Day each night
they just mentioned/played a snipet of that song on the 60 Songs that explain the 90's podcast (the episodes about Killing in the name of). havent thought of this version of the song in +20 years and now i hear about it twice in 2 days, haha
Hah! It's one of those songs that really stuck with certain people, it seems. For better or worse. Honestly? I kinda wish there was a version of it without the Godzilla roar... Because other than that? It's kinda cool.
They replied saying 2 of those things are happening and that they just put them on to make themselves feel better when the other don’t lol
Well, that fucking ruined my day. Real glad I managed to see them twice in the last year and never took them for granted. Sorry, I know that's melodramatic but... One of my all-time favorite bands. And one of those things I could always turn to when the world felt like it was always changing. I kinda figured they'd always exist.
FWIW, he does play with them still on occasion. The Bosstones were very much a part-time gig the last couple of years.
Well, for anyone curious as to why? It's super disappointing. Looks like Dicky produced a song used at an anti-vax rally. At first I was like, "Well, maybe he didn't know." Turns out? He quit his Kimmel gig out of the blue two weeks ago and is moving to Arizona. All kinda adds up... Fuck. That's a bummer.
That’s… weird… I found an article saying “he retired.” But yikes. That anti-vax thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth
I know Bosstones played last year but can't be Riot Fest without a 90's ska band, and Less Than Jake doesn't count.. there's 2 obvious that have never played Riot, I think they are due on one of them
