Fair point, just seems weird to drop that on a Friday. Then again when they pulled ticket sales prior to the lineup, I didn't think they'd let it sit for 6 weeks without any sales. So who knows

Aren’t price increases usually tied to tickets sold for most festivals rather than announcements?

Kinda surprised they didn’t mention anything about more festival updates coming soon in that e-mail from that quote…

I mean, I don’t agree entirely with the list but Newport Folk Festival is a pretty relevant fest in the country/folk/americana/etc. scene and is one of the more unique festivals out there.

    Things have changed.

Newport is where Dylan went electric and changed rock forever.

Remember when it was speculated that Taking Back Sunday might be another band announced but no one wanted to wait that long for more bands? Lol, looks like we are probably waiting that long.

I know, right? Just watch. They'll announce the final wave of bands on the 9th... With no Taking Back Sunday in sight.

Because they seem to be a perennial "I hope they can play" band and at least one of us has a username referencing them...

On Mike Herrera's podcast, a listener called in and outright why MxPx had never played Riot Fest. He gave a pretty blunt answer.

They've been in talks with them more than a few times about playing but are yet to get the "right offer" and indicated that Riot didn't tend to offer most bands much money and it's something bands tend to do "to be part of the club" or whatever. He mentions the money they've been offered as a big reason, but also indicated there were other circumstances and delved into the band being very careful to do things that will "push the ball forward."

All that said? He seemed into the idea and mentioned it was more just a "matter of time."

Which... Isn't surprising to hear, given where the band might fall on a Riot Fest billing versus what they could do headlining-wise on their own.

  10. To add to that, it's not like MxPx has zero relationship with Riot Fest. The MxPx / Five Iron Frenzy / Kris Roe show I went to in 2015 was a Riot Fest Presents show. I do hope they play the fest at some point, but I can also see how they could get lumped in with the legacy / nostalgia bands on the lineup and might not want that.

    It's chaos. Be kind. Prestigious

I think MxPx is mostly a west coast convenience show band, a lot like Goldfinger. If they tour, it's a short stint and that's it. That being said, I'd love to see both bands play because they're both on my bucket list.

Yeah, I think they've nailed down the "how often we can hit each market to keep demand up and make it profitable so we can have this as a career" formula and stick to it.

It's easy for a band like Less Than Jake or Lagwagon to do it as part of a bigger tour. But when you're a regular working band who tours minimally... Flying out for a single weekend gig that's not paying as much as you might make on a regular stop in that city, I can see how it might not be that enticing unless the money is really there.

Feels like Goldfinger is a pretty perfect comparison in that regard, to be honest.

Interesting! This pretty much nails what you’ve sad before about them. Now I wanna hear why Goldfinger and RBF have never played it. Haha

Yeah, the schpiel was pretty similar to everything Mike has intimated before... But he got a bit more specific this time and named the festival by name because the fan was so specific. Haha.

Worth noting too that he said they'd be into playing it, and it felt more like a matter of time and the right set of circumstances for it to happen. So they're down for it. Just need the right things to fall into place.

Funny enough, Mike currently lives in Waco, Texas.. I think the other members are still in the Seattle area though.

I'm thinking RBF not being booked on Riot yet is a timing issue.. based on some of the places I've seen RBF, I don't think Aaron has ever turned down a gig

Armor For Sleep has an announcement Thursday. Was really hoping they would have been on this lineup. Still not even sure there’s going to be an actually second wave or more bands announced at this point though.

It’s a new song/music video on Thursday. Plus announcing a New album that’s coming out in September

They said they had more announcements and in an e-mail from a few weeks back they said they had more bands. Between that and the indication from that one radio DJ that there was more coming?

I've been swayed into believing we may be getting an additional stage this year and some additional bands. If that winds up not being the case? I'm cool with it. But all of the signs right now are pointing to more bands TBA.

It's a bit late in the game, but people who bought tickets won't be complaining about it. And more bands might just further drive ticket sales. So long as they give people 1.5-2 months notice? It'll only bump numbers up. We still have some time in July.

Speaking of aftershows, is there a possibility there are some special ones as it is Metro's 40th anniversary this year?

For example NIN started their career playing at Metro, and back in 2018 they played an aftershow in Mexico City (they day after they headlined a festival) in a venue about the same size as the Metro, so it might be something they are willing to repeat!

If I had to put my money down, next week is the week we get more announcements. Maybe aftershows earlier in the week with another announcement later in the week (more bands and the like)?

That would put them about just over two months out from the festival itself. Plenty of time to move more tickets, allow people to book travel, etc. This is all assuming the adds will sway the tide for folks because I doubt the aftershows will, hah.

It's a possibility, sure. And hey! Maybe that's one of the special things Riot Mike was talking about. Not necessarily NIN, but some of the bigger acts over the weekend for sure.

NIN are flying in from Los Angeles to Chicago either overnight or Sunday morning.. kind of overkill to ask them to play an aftershow.. Trent's muscles need the rest

I'll take any kind of announcement soon as this point, I don't like making plans last minute LOL

really hope riot fest has a strong replacement on standby Sunday night. I know it’s different circumstances, but I was at the warped 25 event in Mountain View where NOFX were supposed to headline. They had played in Canada the night before and I guess their flight got delayed that day. They eventually made it to the show, but only had like 30ish minutes to play a headlining set and it was clear warped tour had no backup plan in place if they hadn’t made it.

I’d hate for something like that to happen at Riot Fest, even though I’m not personally planning on seeing NIN

Trent is almost 99.9% taking a chartered flight so I wouldn't worry too much
