La Dispute is one of the bands Im surprised havent returned to Riot, I was hoping for them to play this year for their Wildlife anniversary tour.
For anyone hoping that All-American Rejects might get added: Very unlikely. They announced a few tour dates today, most of which are blacked out (except WWY and Emo Nite New Orleans). But nothing on the weekend of Riot.
Kid Cudi teasing a show for Cleveland on Sept 17. so IF there is a significant 2nd wave coming, he is in the area, and would really add to the currently pretty lackluster hip hop roster.
Seems to be a one off hometown show and not a tour (I think we are still getting some big names, but not Kid Cudi big) Still surprised Pharcyde weren't on the initial lineup since they are touring the Bizarre Ride album play and skipped Chicago.. would've totally taken them over Action Bronson lol
My prediction for the full 2nd Wave: Tenacious D Greta Van Fleet Black Star Taking Back Sunday Story of the Year Eve 6 Pinkshift John Hinkley
Maaaan my airbnb just cancelled on me and it's gonna be real expensive to find a new place that's not super far away
Why on earth would anybody think Riot Fest would book John Hinckley? LOL Aren't most of his shows getting cancelled?
Because it’d be unexpected and crazy. because they could pay him very little money and he’d get them a lot of press and draw a decent crowd on a side stage at noon. Because this is all pretend and it’s fun to imagine.
Nah, it'd be a whack and disappointing booking. They could easily give a slot like that to a younger artist contributing something meaningful to the overall music scene. Or bump up an act and slot in a smaller one.
I don't think John Hinkley is the surprise that Riot has been working towards for the past several years.
I'm interviewing Mo, Riot Fest's graphic designer, for my podcast on Monday! If anyone has any questions, feel free to hit me up! Also, my podcast is called Films for the Void! linktr.ee/filmsforthevoid
I think we all want to know about that mysterious second wave and whatever else Riot Mike was talking about, but I assume that was already on your list.
Aaaand subscribed! Rad to see the most recent episode be an interview with a band I love (Grey Matter). One question I've always wondered about the poster is how much of a pain in the ass it is to get names to fit on certain lines and how much consideration goes into that (example: might a band with a longer name get forced to a lower line versus their line-up positioning just because it fits better with the other bands that happen to fall there). Also: How much of a panic is it when a band drops to get the poster art updated? Has a band ever dropped the day or two before the line-up drop? How stressful is it when that happens? (These are all super nerdy but I know I'm not alone in wondering about this sort of thing.) EDIT: Also, how long does the poster art take to make? Do they start it like, the month before the line-up drop... Or is it an ongoing, iterative process?
I haven’t looked myself, but some of my friends that have looked at air bnb and hotels here of late (not riot weekend) have said prices have been getting really bad, so not surprised people are getting their riot fest bookings cancelled.
Another week, another e-mail hitting at announcements without indicating they are coming anytime soon: "Stay tuned for many more festival-related announcements, schedules, and after shows in the coming months! We'll see you September 16-18, 2022 at Douglass Park in Chicago." The shift in language between e-mails is strange at this point. Like, if you have more bands coming... Why not just say it consistently?!!
at least via the last sentence, we can officially crosscut 'extra days' and 'location change (this year at least)' as the announcement, haha
my questions are all lighthearted but also genuinely curious - what was thought thought process on the 2018 design style change (with the top 11 stacked vertically on the left side) and did they hate it so much they went back to the original style? haha -did they have a reaction to the white board leak? or did it not even hit their radar? - wall of text vs break down by day - whats their favorite? which makes a lineup look more stacked in their opinion? which is more fun to make? cant wait to hear it!
Fair points all-around, haha. I always felt the "extra days" post-announcement was never going to happen so it's nice to see the confirmation. Can you imagine the shit storm from fans if they added an additional day before the festival this close to it actually happening? 1+ years in advance when most people haven't booked travel yet (or know it will likely need to be adjusted again) is one thing; 3.5 months out is another thing completely. EDIT: Your questions for the podcast are also really, really great! Bummed I didn't come up with the style change for 2018 and the whiteboard leak one myself. Haha.
