Here's the full interview https://www.101wkqx.com/kqx-morning-crew/ 14 minutes in, 9 am hour (it's like 5 minutes long and worth listening to)
Really interesting and I'm straight-up baffled as to what it could possibly be referring to. I don't think it means longer sets unless they are adding a rotating stage set-up on some of the stages... But that doesn't feel very "big." Maybe adding a new stage "type" like stand-up comedy or specific themed sets or something? @troyplaysbass idea of it becoming a hybrid indoor/outdoor festival thing would be really neat too! That would just be a cool idea all-around.
Reddit noticed something interesting. The filename for the lineup image on RF's website includes the words "First Wave". Seems like we might be getting a second wave after all. https://riotfest.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Riot_2022_Art_Layout_FIRST-WAVE_TALL-1-scaled.jpg
yea they definitely cant add time to the fest in the park (extra days or extending the hours). the after show idea is really cool. other than that maybe some sort of off shoot sister fest in a diff city or a diff part of the year in Chi, or the new stage types/style of entertainment idea. maybe somethign not directly related to the fest at all... i really have no idea.
Idk maybe I'm just being like resistant to change, but the rotating stage thing is something I really don't want to see incorporated in every fest. It makes sense for certain things, but it just seems like a nightmare of conflicts to me. I'd only want to see that on a fest with 3 or less stages. So I hope it's not that (and I also don't think it will be that). But I'm baffled what else it could be.
Listening to that interview, he makes it seem like something that will change the nature of Riot Fest going forward, and I think that would be much bigger than adding stages or other types of entertainment to the fest itself. A sister fest (Riot Fest Suburbs? The return of Riot Fest Denver/Toronto/etc?) would be neat, but I hope it's something that both helps justify the increased ticket price and can be enjoyed by people traveling in for the fest.
Riot Mike's words (not verbatim, but close) from the interview: " Yea, we are going to be announcing something in a couple of weeks that is a culmination of a couple of years work that will lead into the future of Riot. We're pretty excited. We don't make big moves like this very often, the last was taking it outside... that's not going away but we are adding additional detail and are really excited. The rest of the month we still have a ton of stuff to do.. It's uplifting" to me with the "more to come, first wave" from Lauren's twitter, it'll have something to do with Riot Chicago this year and not a return to Denver, etc
I’d be down for the return of Riot Fest Denver. As a west-coaster it’d be a lot nicer …or if they decided to attempt the SoCal Riot that never came to be
and to add some context - Riot Mike's answer was in response to he had just gave some band names and then a host asked "besides the bands what other type of experiences can we expect this year" so it definitely seems to be about something happing in the park this year.
Concept: Thursday does an aftershow on Friday since they'll already be with My Chemical Romance on tour?
Yeah, I interpreted this as something that had to do with Riot Fest itself on the weekend. Not additional shows before the festival or whatever. Maybe they have events that lead up to it or whatever... But I took it as them changing the format/details on the festival grounds. One thing to note is that the site specifically says they will have "5 stages" so the number of changes is same as it ever was... I did notice that they don't seem to be referencing the "and carnival" part anymore. So maybe they're shifting something else? I really am at a loss but excited to see what it all brings!
This has happened before. Bands that are part of a tour not playing Riot but play an aftershow, so its a possibility for them and Homless Gospel Choir to play an aftershow
That would be awesome! But I'm not sure it would work logistically, getting everybody out, etc. Also not sure how that would play out with local noise ordinances.
I think there's a curfew which is why it ends at 10.. but If we really want to go far fetched.. Riot adds a second venue where they can play past 10 pm, start at like 10:45-11 pm and do another 3-4 hour festival included with your ticket instead of after shows
Just read the FAQ and I think I figured it out. They'll be adding camping this year?!! JK. Did anybody actually fall for this?
The aftershow thing kind of makes sense in a full circle way, bringing together the indoor and outdoor parts of the fest. Just seems like a logistical nightmare if they were all free
accoustic stage, comedy tent, bmx/skating half pipe, wrestling (which wouldnt be new), silent disco (but call it the silent mosh pit or something), punk rock Price is Right tent... i dunno im out of ideas
Yeah, the big con of that idea (besides money - they obviously make plenty of money on aftershows and may not want to give that up) is logistics. Could you reserve free spots? Some percentage of tickets on sale to non-fest attendees? Would people leave the fest early to camp for a smaller aftershow?
Well he did say it was a culmination of a couple of years.. and to put a festival at a totally different location for after hours, would definitely take several years to fine tune I think the one ticket will get you into both and they'll make out like bandits just on concessions compared to aftershows and again far fetched and a total logistical nightmare but if it's years in the making.. it's something BIGLY
