Dinosaur Jr was good in 2018, but they did an album play that year of a record I wasn't familiar with and I had to leave early to get to another set so I didn't get to see the songs I wanted to hear unfortunately.
yea i had to miss them in 2017 because i had gotten front row for TV on the Radio, and then decided to hold that spot to also be front for MIA. dont regret it, but would like to catch them this year! is anyone else starting to feel electric with actual talk like this happening for real again?!?
I really hope it is, but i am also hopefull the world will be back to some normallity by then and it is a safer place.
Yes! And I'll take the optimism and speculation in the moment... Even if it leads to a bummer moment down the line. Speculating on the line-ups, stage placements, etc. is quiet a bit of the fun for me leading up to the festival and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it!
The plan is to go to a taping of wait wait the thursday of so hopefully I can ask Peter Segal how he feels about this years lineup
I think the Judas Priest/Sabaton tour also give them good chances for them to play Riot. They play Ohio on Firday 17 and then Milwaukee on the 22, and they didnt reschedule their 2020 date that was in Rosemont
I'm less convinced of this as Judas Priest wouldn't quite be Riot Fest's brand, and it's fairly common for a band of their ilk to have a few days off between each date, but for the current tour it looks like they typically have a few days off between each date. But them playing Riot on Sunday would fit with that pattern given the two dates you listed. There's some other points in their schedule where there's extended days off so it's not a guarantee but... Maybe? Haha. Would be an interesting billing, to say the least. And it would certainly be a draw of a different sort. Could also see some of the current line-up potentially on the same stage stage (Coheed, Circa, Living Colour) fleshed out with some additional metal acts.
This was another thought I had. They would make sense as direct support to someone much more so than a third headliner... But they are too big for that. So I don't see it happening. It's also a very weird year, so who knows what might be on the table. I do think the gap in dates makes it feel more likely. I don't expect any big swings, but of all the bands of their "ilk" I would say that Priest and Maiden are the two who have a shot at playing Riot Fest at some point. I would also, personally, be disappointed to have them be the third headliner because that would bring the festival dangerously close to Wimmer territory in terms of headliners. My Chemical Romance, Judas Priest, and Smashing Pumpkins would 100% be something they might book at those festivals. I understand when people say they wish Riot Fest would be more diverse in terms of genres, but I really hope they don't branch out too much beyond what they already do. There's plenty of other festivals that have the other genres covered. I love the fact that it has a punk rock backbone but always books a smattering of hip-hop, indie, emo, etc. to fill out the line-up. If they swing too much in any one direction it would either get too same-y from stage to stage or they would run the risk of becoming too "same-y" as other festivals.
they could be, but per the email from June "More bands, and headliners, and surprises still to be announced!" granted, that's a very vague sentence.. and could mean second stage headliners more like Nofx
i am thinking RTJ will remain the 3rd for a few reasons: -they have only gotten more relevant since the headlined in 2018 with the release of RTJ4. -They were a last minute bailout (along with weezer and tbs) to cover for the blink drop out / 3rd headliner falling through (many thought to be bauhaus reunion) in 2018.. so itd be a bit of a dick move by riot to initially list them top 3 for 20/21 only to then drop them down for someone 'bigger' later on. though its possible RTJ or a 4th TBA headliner could take the thursday night spot as Riot says on their site, "Don’t look at the lineup for any hints, though—one of the bands will be a Thursday exclusive, meaning they won’t play the rest of the festival!"
Who do we think will headline Thursday night? My money's on NOFX, or some sort of huge punk band along those lines.
International Superheroes of Hardcore in all seriousness, although ISOH has to be one of the mystery bands.. they are already booked "This extra night of Riot Fest will be jam-packed with secret sets from mystery bands, some of which will be Preview Party exclusives! We’re talking bucket list performances and major bragging rights earned. We’re pulling out all the stops for you—no holding back. You won’t want to miss it." that doesn't scream Nofx to me
agreed, my guess is in the nofx/rancid/bad religion sort of level, i imagine they want someone pretty universally liked (in the 'attendees of riot' sense) to make the extra day feel worth it' for everyone.
"Don’t look at the lineup for any hints, though—one of the bands will be a Thursday exclusive, meaning they won’t play the rest of the festival!" Thursday playing on Thursday screams something Riot Fest would do
How does this Thursday night thing work? If I buy a ticket now will I not be able to attend that night?
I really hope The Misfits never play with Michale Graves again. They are still riding the Original Misfits wave, though, and it seems there is more to come with that.
