Apparently Naked Raygun will have a new album out in 2021. I'd say that makes them "highly likely" for 2021. If not at the festival itself, I'd imagine they'd be part of an aftershow. EDIT: Thinking on it? A "Chicago" themed stage for a day would be pretty amazing. Rise Against with Alkaline Trio, Naked Raygun, the Lawrence Arms, Local H, Sincere Engineer, and whoever.
I think we'd have a better shot at them as a "surprise headliner" on the Thursday than being part of the festival proper.
I think that Rise Against would be the surprise for Thursday since it should be smaller in scope than the normal days of the fest. Fall Out Boy would be a nice headliner. They haven't played since 2013 right?
2013 sounds about right. It was the second year after they brought it outside and into a park. With Blink-182 and the Replacements. They'd be a fine headliner, I think. But for whatever reason, my gut is telling me that if they were to play it would be on Thursday. Mostly because of how much they hyped the surprises in that initial announcement (although festivals generally overhype their shit, so I dunno). Both FOB and Rise Against would work on either day, IMHO.
I mean I guess the Smashing Pumpkins would have to headline a "Chicago" day since they are already booked *how dare you leave out hum (their album from last year was amazing) *a Local H as Nirvana set on Thursday Night WOULD BE THE SHIT *not from Chicago, but the Bosstones & the Offspring have new albums coming out (and the already mentioned Every Time I Die).. so they are probably on the likely list.. Dropkicks as well, but they just don't seem likely since they played the fest more recently than the other two
I guess I was leaning toward "Chicago punk" more than anything there, hah. My B. But I would be lying if I said I hadn't totally blanked on the Pumpkins being from Chicago. As for Hum, I really like them on-record but the live show is just so dull for me... I think the Bosstones, the Offspring, and ETID are probably very likely adds. I kinda hope they don't waste a stage headlining slot on the Murphys but it could happen.
I think hum is like Pixies, if you like the songs.. you'll like the set.. because Blank Francis does literally no banter and they just play their songs, like when I saw them when they reunited in 2005 the highlight was Kim Deal smoking a cigarette ... but they've got a heck of a catalogue
I think it's a bit more nuanced than that for me. I like Hum, but I don't actively engage with the songs. I throw it on when I'm doing something else in the background. It's my version of "vibe" music... Which is why they lose me in a live setting. If that makes sense. I'm far more into the Pixies, so I enjoy it live quite a bit.
The only ones I can think of are Modest Mouse, All Time Low, White Reaper and Death Fron Above 1979... Green Day as a wishful thinking
There's some acts that could play Riot Fest aesthetically (DFA1979, Modest Mouse, St. Vincent, ATL, White Reaper). And I'm sure there's a few that would work that I'm just not familiar with... But I think it's safe to assume that there will be zero crossover.
If we are indeed getting a Chicago themed stage I would gladly have Chevelle, Mest and Madina Lake as a part of it.
Green Day could still play as the Network on Thursday.. a few bands have played Riot & Kaboo in California on the same week the last several years.. but more than likely, zero crossover
I'd rather most of the above mentioned people at Lolla instead, i like a little variety but Riot needs to UP THE PUNX
I'd like Matt and Kim to come back this year if possible. I think they only have one show scheduled this year so far.
I was reacting more to the bands themselves than the distance. It's logistically feasible for bands to do it but... Given who those bands are and the distance, I think it makes them very unlikely. A band like Incubus could reasonably trace from CA to Chicago for a single appearance with all of their gear, etc. and have the trek be worth their time. But for a band White Reaper's size, I'm not sure it would be worth it unless it were part of a tour. That being said, I could totally see St. Vincent or Modest Mouse playing both. More so St. Vincent because they've never played before.
