I saw Limp Bizkit at Boomtown a couple of years ago and they spent half the set covering other band's songs and the other half ranting about aliens and Donald Trump before Wes' rig blew up. It was bizarre. Edit: here's the setlist: Limp Bizkit Setlist at Boomtown Fair 2018
I think Hoobastank's first incarnation was as a ska punk band, it was under a different name but this is something I just vaguely remember from 17 years ago
You’re 100% correct. They were a ska punk/funk metal fusion band and were kind of clumped in the same scene as early Incubus and 311. That type of alt metal. Their first EP is unreal (Oh yeah, they used to have a horn section too)
No joke, the first time I heard "Crawling in the Dark" on the radio my immediate thought was "This is like pop-punk Incubus!" And this is like "3rd wave ska Incubus." I had always heard this is what they used to sound like, but I never really dug in... Christ, this is a trip.
About 8 or so years ago this guy I knew posted the song I shared above on my Facebook wall and said something like “what once was.” I remember listening to it thinking “wait... Hoobastank? THE Hoobastank? ‘The Reason’ Hoobastank?” But I ate that shit up. It’s like fusing Incubus’ SCIENCE with Mr. Bungle’s self-titled It’s also a pretty good conversation starter with any music-inclined friend you have
http://cos.lv/xB8r50DybrP Elsewhere in the conversation, Bell spoke about Cuomo’s penchant for announcing a new project while they’re in the middle of another one, his desire for a filmed streaming performance of the band’s latest album OK Human, and their plans for a 20th anniversary performance of the Green Album later this year. Hmm... maybe a Green Album set for Riot is possible? Maybe if the Hella Mega Tour can’t work this year
As someone that was a dumbass that paid $150 for GA Pit to see Limp Bizkit, I would absolutely only go out of my way to see them again at a festival like Riot. However, it was a very, very fun, goofy time.
When I saw them on the self-titled tour multiple times back in 2001-02, they would still bust out "Earthsick" which is a jam.
Punk Rock Bowling dropped their new 2021 lineup today. What do we think? Any overlap aside from Circle Jerks? I could see NOFX coming back. Getting my hopes up for Devo too
I just rewatched the episode of Futurama where Devo makes a cameo, & it got me hoping I'll get to see them one day. I really hope they'd play RF too
I'd love that. ...And it'd only take up around a third of their set time. *cough* Do Maladroit too. *cough*
Was coming in here to share this! Hah. Given this line-up, I'm banking on NOFX being part of the second wave of Riot Fest acts. I'd also put Devo in the "very likely" category too. Not sure if they would be headliner or direct support, but they'd be high up in the billing. The Lawrence Arms were meant to play in 2020, as per statements by BK on a Patreon podcast, so I think they're very likely for 2021 too. Could see them playing the same stage as NOFX. None of the rest are particularly "big gets," and all have a Riot Fest vibe about them so... I'd say they're all up for grabs. Except for Propagandhi (unless they've softened their stance on sponsorships). I'd be most excited about Pears, Good Riddance, and H09909. These also feel the most likely to me, TBH. I could see Streetlight and the Aggrolites being slotted as part of that "ska" stage that will undoubtedly happen. Only catch with the Aggrolites is that there's some younger bands who could fit that slot just as well that have a bit more "buzz" relatively speaking (e.g., Catbite, Kill Lincoln). Municipal Waste and the Lunachicks would be fun headliners on the side stage.
DEVO is a huge bucket list band for me. I really hope Riot can grab em, since they’ve really slowed down on shows in recent years
I’d love to see more diversity on the lineup honestly. NNAMDI would be very cool. Charly Bliss, Diet Cig, Worriers, Julien Baker, Bartees Strange, Hop Along, Courtney Barnett, Chastity Belt, Great Grandpa, Dehd, Retirement Party, Lala Lala, more indie punk groups like those, just to name some off the top of my head, would be cool. I know there’s always some every year but there totally could be way more. Also more hip hop too, acts like Denzel Curry, Noname, or even Tyler, The Creator would fit right in at Riot Fest.
Add Phoebe Bridgers to that list too! Tyler played Denver Riot in 2016, so he’d fit right in, I think
Phoebe would be amazing, and she has that persona that fits right in with Riot’s vibe. Same with Tyler who as you mentioned played Denver before.
There are some indie bands that I think would do great at Riot like Franz Ferdinand, The Vaccines, Kasabian and Kaiser Chiefs.
I wouldn't be mad if Slipknot was the third headliner. Wonder who they'd pair them up with on a stage. Looking at the current line-up, I'm not seeing much that would be a direct fit. Fever 333, definitely. Others would feel like a stretch or I already have them pegged as playing the same stage as other bands (e.g., Coheed or Circa would work but would be a better fit alongside the Pumpkins or MCR). But who knows what wave 2 holds... One other thing to consider is that in the interview when Corey referenced their touring plans, he highlighted that they were in touch with LiveNation regularly for updates. That would imply that the tour is largely connected with that company. Doesn't rule out a one-off festival appearance, but it means it's centered around a full-on tour which, IMHO, makes a festival date a bit less likely for a band like Slipknot.
