Yeah, I think Reel Big Fish and MxPx are names that pop-up in this thread every year. Among those three, they're the one I'm most surprised hasn't ever played... On his podcast, Mike Herrera has alluded to festivals that come to MxPx with offers that are pretty much low-balling them compared to what they could make doing a headliner in that city and I've always wondered if that was in reference to Riot Fest or not. I honestly think the best bet for getting MxPx is Goldfinger being booked. Double-dipping! I'm pretty sure that March tour is an acoustic one, anyway. So not sure that would have such a big impact. We'll want to keep an eye on what Soupy says during that set too. Might drop some hints about them coming back, etc.
Yeah they're doing the Upsides at Slam Dunk to kind of gauge interest in Upsides shows, so I think if they're doing it anywhere else it'll definitely be Riot Fest at the very least.
They're playing acoustic and electric sets. Hopefully he says something at the Dallas date on March 1.
They played in 2018. Would they bring them back that quickly? I genuinely don't know how long they wait to have repeats but I would love it if they were there.
there are a few bands who seem to be on an every other year, or every 3rd year cycle. its not known if riot does that on purpose, or if the patterns just work out that way. all that to say, they can definitely be back after only 2 years... and then of course our 3 yearly mainstays... haha
2018 bands I could see returning: Alkaline Trio Dropkick Murphys Atmosphere Flogging Molly Bad Religion Underoath The Front Bottoms Twin Peaks The Wonder Years Hot Snakes Lagwagon Andrew WK (duh) GWAR (duh) The Aquabats Face to Face The Bouncing Souls Adolescents Direct Hit!
for context: bands that played in 2017 & 2019.. Pennywise Hot Water Music Streetlight Manifesto Andrew WK GWAR Taking Back Sunday Jawbreaker Wu-Tang Clan
Alkaline Trio played in 2018. Repeat acts are obviously a thing at Riot but I feel aside from the staples, repeat acts two years or under are unnecessary, unless they release new music or have a huge boost in popularity (i.e. Beach Bunny could realistically play again). That spot could go to someone else who has not played recently. Also, as mentioned above, Matt's recent actions make me (and others) not interested in him playing the festival.
ive tried to look into it the best i could at work over the last hour and im personally of the belief of giving someone the benefit of the doubt until they do something overt. from what i looked at, people are dropping him because of reading/posting problematic books, liking problematic bands, and knowing some sketchy ass people. This is in no way a comment on other people who morally feel they need to drop him from their life, thats their choice and right, i personally need concrete proof that he himself has done an act of some sort that is worthy of it. And it feels like if he is as bad as some think, that bands like NOFX, Bad religion, and others wouldn't continue to be so close with him. definitely seems like a weird dude who is very comfortable in the uncomfortable. and again, no offense to anyone who sees it different.
Smashing Pumpkins are the opening act for Guns n Roses in 6 dates of their US tour, but not in Chicago. Do you think they will fit at Riot? Although I think they can also play Lollapalooza
With Foo Fighters, Rage and Pearl Jam both super rumored for Lolla, I could see them going either direction tbh.
Ohh good catch. Yeah they could definitely go either way. I'd imagine if it's Riot they'd be a main headliner, and probably a second line act if they go Lolla. Pulling for Riot.
Lolla is not going to have the Smashing Pumpkins, I'd be really really surprised. I think they'll have Rage for sure. And maybe Foo or PJ, but definitely not both, and I'm honestly not really expecting either. Smashing Pumpkins could theoretically play Piqniq, which is always a wildcard that I forget about.
