I also didn't know about SN, but yeah I think a lot of it is money. PG has a lot of crossover appeal to a certain kind of exurban Gen X crowd too, so it comes from differing sources. That said, my experience of what happened with Pinegrove was that it was (at least publicly) handled better than any similar situation. The lengthy social post at the start of it all, plus some of the interviews Evan gave early in the Marigold press cycle, modeled a lot of what I think many people find lacking in the responses to these kinds of circumstances. That said, the public non-gossip narrative of it is basically 100% supplied by Evan so there's always going to be some niggling uncertainty around him. -------------- edit - Thinking about it a little more, I think Pinegrove also carries an ethos of thoughtful sensitivity that probably played into it. Especially for big fans, I think it was easier than usual to believe that all the introspection and accountability was earnest, at minimum to the extent that they deserved to be welcomed back. bahahahahahha
Yeah can't forget about that... Every once in a while I think about PWR BTTM and how they'd 100% be back in a big way already if they were both willing to make music again. That one was (honestly, still is) one of my bigger internal "art vs. artist" issues.
This is a wash for me. I don't care about Pinegrove and while I really enjoy Dinosaur Jr., I was inevitably going to skip them for somebody else I've never seen before/haven't seen at a festival before/that I just like way more. I don't know enough about the Pinegrove situation to have any comment on it but... I won't be watching their set, regardless.
I consider this a win because Dino Jr seems to be the only one taken off of the updated poster. I wasn’t going to see them probably and I’m not going to see Pinegrove, so I’m just happy that no band I want to see was taken off.
I think the fact that they replaced Dinosaur Jr. with somebody a little further down the poster (though, honestly, it's probably pretty equal in terms of draw) probably means they had to do some set time shuffling... Which probably set the schedule back a bit. I'm sure it's set now, with Pinegrove being added in. I'm guessing we get something tomorrow.
Smashing Pumpkins reared their social media heads today to tweet about Riot Fest and Sea.Hear.Now! A positive sign for anybody nervous about them cancelling for one reason or another.
Whole weekend of non-Riot affiliated but late enough to be one aftershows got announced at Liars Club.
Some people on reddit are annoyed they added Pinegrove (for reasons related to their music, not the allegations) and it's like...1) you don't have to watch them and 2) They're not much different than like...Alex G or Ratboys who no one batted an eye about being on the lineup. That being said, I've never really listened to Dinosaur Jr. and cannot comment on whether Pinegrove is a downgrade or not. They sell out here when they come through so I'd guess it's not a downgrade.
it's a downgrade but i'd guess mostly different audiences. imo dinosaur jr are up there with some of the influential bands of the early/mid 90s who put alternative on the map
I saw pinegrove last week and they were amazing. If any band deserves the benefit of the doubt it’s them, they’ve taken appropriate steps to re-acclimate into society and I believe they are worth supporting.
Plugging my entry for the portapotty contest, if I win I’ll buy each and every one of you a shot of Malort https://p.antavo.com/FoC/2868/+162257/
Hot damn, Riot Fest was running hot. I fully understand this response, though, TBH. For multiple reasons. TBH, it's about equal from an objective standpoint. Pinegrove is a younger band with buzz who is playing venues roughly equivalent to what Dinosaur Jr. is doing (if not bigger in some areas) and as you pointed to -- selling some of them out. Dinosaur Jr. would almost certainly get billed higher on any festival poster and later in the day because they probably are about equal popularity right now, pulling from different demos (albeit with some overlap), with Dino getting the benefit of having that legacy act status. That being said, I can see some of the Dino fans griping about them being replaced with Pinegrove. Especially some of the "balding Guitar Center ski cap flannel weed guy in a denim jacket" crowd. Reading that description, I'm realizing that I'm pretty sure the only difference between the two fanbases is the Guitar Center.
We should all take this moment to help a member of our community achieve a lifelong dream. I am sharing this to my socials and encourage everyone else to do the same!
You know that feeling you get when you call-in sick to work because you're legitimately not feeling good and then you feel better like, 2 hours later and you decide to just use it as a "mental health" day? This is that feeling in picture form. Minus any guilt. J. Mascis legit looks happier handing a human bobblehead a guitar than he did purchasing a car.
