Rob Zombie was a lot of fun at Upheavel a few years ago. It definitely sucks for those who were banking on a replacement in the vein of Pixies genre-wise, but him as a replacement would make a lot of sense.

for sure, havent had this feeling of 'wanting to be excited but its tampered by the rising anxiety" since this time 3 years ago when we were in the thick of the great blink dropout + unannounced 3rd headliner debacle of 2018

I should have qualified that some. Given conflicts and likelihood, pickings are slim. Deftones, Primus, Flogging Molly, and Too Many Zooz are out due to other conflicts.

Orville Peck is still doing their "mainstream festival" run and were just in town for Lolla; I don't see them being a "let's rush to book another festival in Chicago!" act at this point. Maybe in 2022. Riot tends to get the "buzz bands" after they do the more pop-oriented festival runs. Foo Fighters are in the same vein, but also... Too big.

King Gizzard and whatever that talking Heads side-project is... Simply not a fit.

Dashboard is logical, but I really don't see them being a rush booking. And would be an underwhelming replacement. But out of all the names they feel the most likely, TBH.

EDIT: In addition, Dashboard and Orville Peck are both already playing festivals Riot Fest weekend already.

Hah! I was just thinking that this all went from being a wild, new experience where things were changing and unpredictable but they were rolling with it... To feeling like 2018 where shit was in question up until the last minute.

I had been super optimistic about all of this up until today but now I’m thinking… maybe complete radio silence 10 days after saying “more bands in the coming days” is NOT a sign that things are going well :/

I'm curious as to your reasoning behind this. I'd argue both are a fit as:

    1. King Gizzard not only released a thrash metal album a few years ago (and thrash metal is definitely in RF's wheel house), but their more psychedelic/indie/whatever stuff at times reminds me of bands like Flaming Lips or Ween that no one questions would fit in at Riot.

    2. People in RF prediction threads are constantly clamoring for a Talking Heads reunion that will likely never happen. Given that this project that was slated for Bonnaroo includes a full album play of a classic TH album and involves two people who played on the record, I think it would be a very welcome addition as a mid-day offering to many of the same people who would have wanted to watch the Pixies or who will be watching Devo.

Interesting… Fishbone just confirmed they’re playing The Reality Of My Surroundings at Riot. That’ll be a solid set

It also gives me hopes for more album plays, which I was starting to write off.

Was it an image that looked like it came from the riot fest graphic design team, or was it just a text tweet?

The picture was just Fishbone’s logo and the name of the album. It wasn’t an official Riot Fest-branded image

The Flaming Lips and Ween are outliers who are way higher-up on the line up. They also fit the whole "90s legacy act" thing. King Gizzard is a traditional "festival" band. I see what you're saying on paper, but the general perspective on King Gizzard is very different than the other two.

TBH, the Talking Heads talk (no pun intended) always seems to come from people who just like festivals in general. And it's a small but vocal minority. Not anybody in Riot Fest's core. And I highly doubt your average Talking Heads fan would view that as an equivalent. In fact, I would argue that most people don't even know it exists...

I could be wrong on both, but I would be shocked if King Gizzard or any Talking Heads related project were to play.

This is a good thing! It also means that an announcement was probably supposed to happen today but hasn't yet. So maybe it's not actually good?

I think I get where you're coming from, but I think we'll just have to chalk it up to a difference of opinion.

I think a King Gizzard set would fit in sonically and be a ton of fun, and I think they would help to balance out some of the 20+ year old legacy acts that typically take up a good chunk of the top half of the lineup without necessarily diluting the core "Riot Fest sound".

And I definitely agree Talking Heads fan would NOT see that tribute act as an equivalent, but I definitely think it would be a fun thing to check out on the mainstage at like 2PM or something. Honestly, if the Talking Heads every reunited I think they would be a perfect act for Riot. Despite not being punk, they were part of that CBGB scene in the 70s/80s, and Riot has shown definite interest in similar punk-adjacent bands in the past (e.g. Blondie, Devo, B-52s). This tribute act with people who played on "Remain in Light" may very well be as close as Riot ever gets to a true TH reunion.

To be sure, I'm not trying to debate whether or not these things would be fun. That is super subjective. I'm always talking pure likelihood of something happening.

These things are always subjective and bound to change. For example, if King Gizzard were to ever open for the Flaming Lips on a year they were set to play Riot? No doubt the festival would snag them up as well. They just seem super comfortable being the token "act with loud guitars" mid-day band at the bigger festivals. Maybe when that buzz dies down and they realize they need to diversify.

Riot typically books the Bonnaroo/Lolla acts either just before they hit that buzzy level or when it's completely died down. There's a few examples of this over the years, but off the top of my head? Fitz and the Tantrums, Father John Misty...

A Talking Heads reunion would be a good fit for Riot, for sure, but I doubt Riot would be able to bring them in. That feels more like a "Coachella or nothing" festival appearance and an arena tour to follow. And I'm not sure they would book an act like that in the steed of the "real thing" either. I mean, y'know, other than Sublime with Rome I guess. LOL

The Lawrence Arms dropped out of Punk Rock Bowling as well as two other acts. The festival cited "international travel issues and family-related issues" as the rationale.

Really hope this doesn't impact their Riot Fest appearance. I will be straight-up crushed.
