Do we think that will actually be possible? They could revoke Thursday privileges from resale tickets if they wanted, right?
They could do that, but I really doubt they would bother. There’s no real reason for them to do that. More trouble than it would be worth, TBH.
Exactly. I imagine they want all the Thursday tickets used. Obviously Thursday is more limited but you still want as many people as you can get in the park to help with food/drink/merch sales.
the killers are out as possible 3rd headliner in 2022, announced a show sept 21 of 2022 in chicago (not that they would have been likely anyways..)
That show is a rescheduled date from the tour they announced last year. A tour they announced but never put tickets on sale
Mod Sun has a show in Chicago 9/17 so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him show up at Riot in some capacity (I’m guessing with MGK maybe)
July into early August is usually a total dead spot for announcements. I don't know why I expected this year to be any different, hah. Part of me is feeling like the album plays are going to be pretty underwhelming this year. Which I'm actually totally fine with, if that's the case. I just sort of assumed they'd be dropping more announcements sooner, rather than later, to keep the hype up and keep pushing tickets. EDIT: That Lagwagon tour announcement makes me wish they were playing Riot just so I could see them play Double Plaidinum.
I mean, probably because of the pandemic and things being “different” this year and whatnot. I was expecting more announcements soon too, especially since Friday and Saturday tickets are still open
Probably. They hadn't really been interacting with fans on their timeline throughout all of July. But there was one today and one yesterday.
Are we keeping track of who is out and who is possible for Thursday based on tours announced? Skating Polly just announced tour dates and are out for the Thursday show. Ratboys are also out as they have a show that Thursday. Alex G is probably out too as he’s starting his tour the Friday of Riot in Cleveland and it wouldn’t make sense for him to come to Chicago, leave, then come back. Those are just a few I’ve seen so far to rule out.
I think folks are keeping track of most of the bigger acts mentally, hah. If I have time tonight I'll pull up some tour dates because I definitely identified a few at one point or another... Would be interesting to rule out as many as we can and see what we're left with. I'm sure there's others we can rule out purely based on the kind of act they are, cost, etc.
anything Patton related is out, as is Fucked Up, dinosaur jr, and any of the Summerland bands (living colour being the only one on riot). All those bands are playing st. louis on the 16th
I don’t necessarily think that’ll be the case. Especially if the Thursday sets are supposed to be special/one of a kind. But we’ll have to see!
OH also, I think we’ve officially confirmed Simple Plan and NFG out, since they’re playing Denver the night of Thursday
I think it depends on the band. Somebody like Taking Back Sunday is probably in the mix, but I kinda doubt they would wind book Dinosaur Jr. for a third show that weekend. I'm also doubtful they could convince Devo, Lupe Fiasco, or the Pixies to do something special like that (just as examples). Those artists just don't have that "That sounds fun! Fuck it, let's do it!" vibe at this point in their careers. Then there's the weird ones. Like Coheed having Thursday off. They have a show in Indiana on Wednesday. They could arguably trek over to Riot Fest in time to play on Thursday night, but certainly wouldn't bother with the full stage set-up. So maybe they play but it's just acoustic? Or, take NOFX and the Circle Jerks. Both are playing Friday so will probably be in town on Thursday night. I doubt Fat Mike is going to want to bother doing an on the cheap set "just for fun." But you might be able to convince Keith Morris and the rest of the Circle Jerks to do it as a "practice" gig, y'know? There's a lot of bands that could technically play, but when you throw in other factors it feels like they probably wouldn't (e.g., a show on Wednesday then Riot Friday might just be a travel day; the band just doesn't have the vibe, etc). Hopefully that made sense.
You worded it perfectly! Haha. I was thinking most, if not all the bands playing Thursday will be high-mid-tier to mid-tier. Like, bands of popularity/scene from Taking Back Sunday to The Lawrence Arms I’m speculating they’ll mostly be in the pop punk/emo/punk ballpark Also, TBS’s mini tour with Thursday starts in Michigan on September 17th. It’d seem kind of odd for both bands to come to Chicago, then to Michigan, then BACK to Chicago, but I guess we could consider them in play
Knowing that Thursday and Taking Back Sunday are in Michigan on the 17th makes me think it's pretty unlikely that they'll be a part of the Preview Party now. Bummer! Unless they were to play with another band's gear or something? But that makes them feel pretty unlikely, unfortunately. But then again - it's been a hot minute since they've played shows. Bands are eager and it's not that far a drive. I agree with you on the kind of acts it'll be. I'm looking to bands who are (a) around and just might want to play for fun/practice, (b) part of Riot Fest's "bread and butter" genres, and (c) don't require a lot of set-up. Or maybe we're putting more thought into this than Riot Fest and it's just gonna be whoever the hell they could convince to do it.
