I know this was divisive here the other day, but r/greenday and r/falloutboy both seem confident it’s just a matter of time until the US leg of the Hella Mega Tour gets pushed to 2022. not saying that’s going to happen or that it will affect riot fest; but if it did I could see that being the kind of thing they have to hold off announcing the lineup for.
I'm with this now, unfortunately. MA is planning to open everything up on August 1st, but Boston won't be doing that until August 22nd. So unless those plans change (and soon), I don't think that date will be happening in 2021. Granted, that's just one city. It's a big one. And it's already looking like Milwaukee is out too. And several other states the tour hits are currently in an uptick... I think it's a matter of time. And they just need to hold until the last possible second to confirm that government regulations won't let them perform. It's a bummer, but it's feeling like a reality. To your point, I could see one of the bands being locked in for Riot. And Riot needing to hold on announcing until after the postponement announcement goes out, probably with a "But it's not all bad news; we'll be doing a few one-off shows and festival dates" tack-on at the end. I don't think that'll happen. But it did? Definitely the kind of thing they would want/need to hold on an announcement for.
If riot fest swoops in on any of the hella mega tour bands, I think it’s fall out boy. I just think it would be a headache to fly not only Green Day out the day after playing Vegas, but also have to fly out their whole crew and gear and stage stuff. Meanwhile, Weezer just played in 18, so they’re probably not RF’s first choice. Fall Out Boy is from Chicago, hasn’t played RF since 2013, and maybe most importantly- has a lot of crossover with MCR fans who might otherwise exchange their tickets. If hella mega gets canceled before riot gets announced, I’d be fairly confident FOB is on the bill. Also the interrupters are due to return, and that’d be sick.
Hard agree to all of this (I.e., if it's any band from that tour it would be Fall Out Boy given current circumstances). But that's a pretty huge "if" that would presume that Hella Mega was aware of/confident in the cancellation well ahead of the announcement (aware enough to have bands signed on for other events). Which I really don't think this the case unless they were a late-minute addition or something. Fun to talk about, though. Hah.
anybody want to say their picks for the 3 headliners, no judgements (unless you leave out Smashing Pumpkins).. this is strictly for amusement purposes: I'm going the Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins, & Op Ivy
I don’t think we’re lucky enough to get Op Ivy this year. Imma say The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Fall Out Boy.
Lol no I just don’t feel like it happens this year. I’m not sure the band sees it as “these people have earned our reunion, they’ve been through hell”. I’d love to be wrong tho
I hadn't thought about it much but Knowledge came on whilst i was gardening and all i want now is to be stood in a field shouting along to it. And i don't mean Green day's version.
My 3 headliners picks would be The Smashing Pumpkins, OP Ivy and System of a Down. Wishful thinking: No Doubt and/or Foo Fighters But I still think they will try to get something to get part of the MCR crowd, so maybe Fall Out Boy or Panic at the Disco
My final prediction is to go big, cuz it’s not fun to predict boring things so I’m with op ivy, pumpkins, and run the jewels, with fallout boy for Thursday night, possibly an album set for a ‘feels special’ quality. But if I also had to pick anticlimactic one also? Cage the elephant, pumpkins, nofx. Rise against on Thursday
run the jewels aren't headlining.. there's two empty spots in front of them, so your final answer is Cage?
I think fallout boy will be 3rd on the poster but also Thursday exclusive.. that would possibly anger people, maybe they even open Thursday up to everyone with enough demand
Looks like Jane’s Addiction has a show this year in Philly the week after Riot. Maybe they’re in play?
Not gonna lie, I would be really excited if Cheap Trick are in the bill. (Don't judge me, I've never seen them live)
Fuck it. This isn't what I want, but given the current evidence, here's my best guess: The Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, and Machine Gun Kelly. Only way #3 isn't MGK is if they booked him early. And I feel like they probably did. So this is probably a stupid guess but I'm hesitant to drop the names of any UK-based bands and I think Operation Ivy is too far out of the question. It wouldn't be the most impressive top three, but I suspect it will be rounded out with some very exciting sub-headliners and early evening acts that are TBA (e.g., Devo) that will help balance things some... And the Thursday night headliner? I'd put money on Rise Against. Fall Out Boy second. Either band doing an "early years" set. But, if you were to ask me what I'd want that would have a greater than zero percent chance of happening that's still incredibly unlikely? Green Day, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Operation Ivy.
The reality of the OpIvy reunion theory is that the band has been offered this money countless times by countless festivals over the years. It has to have come up. Numerous times. From multiple festivals globally. And they're yet to say yes. The thing that always trips me up is that the band members all jump at opportunities to perform those songs still. So you'd think it would be a no-brainer. But... Integrity and ethos get in the way for at least one band member, I think. Hah. For it to happen, somebody would have to have a pretty drastic change of heart or need the money for one reason or another. The latter probably sounds a bit harsh, but I don't mean it to be. But if it ever does happen, I hope it's because the band members just want to have fun, give the people what they want, and reap the rewards for what they sowed back in the day. And not because somebody is sick or something, y'know? I don't think they'll be on the line-up for the main festival. But I think there's strong potential for them to be the surprise band at the preview party.
I was thinking Alkaline Trio as a possibility of being the Thursday headliner. I didn't saw them in 2018 (damn you The Wonder Years clash!) but I suppouse they had a big crowd
Obviously not a TON of crossover with Riot, but we can count all of these out for possible hip-hop side stage acts.
Yeah, they definitely had a big crowd! I could see them as an option to be headlining Thursday too. Although if that were the case, I'd also assume they were on the rest of the festival. Which would be a nice way for me to not have to stress about schedule conflicts.
besides Waka Flocka Flame and maybe ASAP Rocky (did he do I love bad bitches that's my fucking problem), I've never heard of any of these people
