Mayor Lightfoot has said that the goal is for Phase 5 (full reopening) by July 4th. Even if they don’t meet that, it still gives two months to get there before Riot Fest.
I feel that the Descendents are one of those bands that Riot Fest would let play any time they want to play.
they played the Chicago version in 2011, 2012, 2014 & 2016 as well.. so yeah, not out of the question
Pull a PRB and book both the Descendents and ALL! In fact, book them both and have ALL play Mass Nerder for an album play. This is good news! I think the fact that all of these festivals being GA and taking place in September (rather than July/August) will help them immensely in terms of being able to be held.
They have actually done that before. In 2011 All played Thursday at the Bottom Lounge with Chad, then Friday with Dave and Scott, then Descendents played the Congress Theater on Saturday. Edit: I forgot that they both played in 2014 too.
Wasn't 2011 the first year they had it outdoors and ALL did a set with each of the three singers doing a batch of songs? That'd be incredible to see, although I highly doubt there's even a remote chance that it happens. Good call. I missed Bartees in that line-up! I'd love to see them on Riot.
2012 was the first year it went into a festival 3 day format. friday congress theater sat/sun Humboldt Park
Yeah, I knew 2012 was the first year for that format because I was there! Haha. But I had it in my head that 2011 included indoor venues as well as an outdoor stage/tent somewhere? Maybe my memory is hazy as I wasn't there, but just read a review of it somewhere...
Super stoked for that new Descendents album. It looks like the songs were written/recorded with the Milo Goes To College-era lineup, so it’d be cool if they did what they did at the 2014 Riot Fest and got Tony Lombardo to play half the set and have Karl play the other half
Yeah Descendents album should be awesome. Having them and ALL play would also be awesome Still pissed they had Rancid and Descendents at the same time last RF
Mae, The Juliana Theory, and Glass Animals are all out. All announced tours with Chicago dates today.
I feel like the last two times the Descendents and Rancid have played Riot they've had some pretty annoying crossover. Now I'm feeling compelled to take a look at the schedules over the years and call out some of the more obnoxious scheduling conflicts...
Glass Animals Chicago show is in 2022, but they will be on Arizona and California during Riot weekend. I was hoping for Juliana Theory playing Emotion Is Dead in full, although their Chicago show is in December, so maybe?
that whole night was rough for me. The entire last 2 1/2 hours there was a band I didn’t want to miss on 4 out of the 5 stages. that day is the reason I don’t mind people like MGK getting added. Sometimes the problem is not having *enough* shitty artists that you’re okay with missing.
Yeah, I think either of them doing a full album play and then coming back and doing the same album play 3 months later is a bit of a stretch. Stoked for that show though. Two classic albums of my youth!
My most frustrating conflict ever was Alkaline Trio and The Wonder Years but I did get to catch a couple TWY songs after Alk3 at least I'd have to go back to remember some other bad ones
ALK3 and TWD was a bad one. I remember struggling with Cap'n Jazz and The Menzingers in 2017. Good thing I saw Cap'n Jazz at the aftershow
That night was the part of the weekend where I really started to understand the value of that Deluxe VIP ticket. I was able to dash between stages and get up close pretty easily. So I watched a few songs by Alkaline Trio, bolted over to the Wonder Years' stage, watched a song, then back to Alk3, etc. I was moving quick and it was an expenditure of energy... But totally worth it in the end. Haha. For me, personally, my most annoying over the years are below. Fortunately, after 2014, moving between stages got to be much easier so I was able to see some partial sets in a lot of these cases, but still! 2014: Samiam vs. RX Bandits The Get Up Kids vs. Dashboard Confessional vs. Wu-Tang Clan The Bouncing Souls vs. Only Crime Billy Bragg vs. The Hold Steady 2015: Faith No More vs. Alkaline Trio Millencolin vs. Pears vs. the Movielife vs. Direct Hit! Rancid vs. Modern Life Is War 2017: X vs. Radar State Wu-Tang Clan vs. Streetlight Manifesto Queens of the Stone Age vs. Taking Back Sunday Prophets of Rage vs. Paramore vs. waiting for Jawbreaker 2018: Lagwagon vs. Liz Phair Atmosphere vs. Taking Back Sunday Piebald vs. Mannequin Pussy The Bouncing Souls vs. Suicidal Tendencies Dillinger Four vs. Superchunk vs. Blondie Alkaline Trio vs. The Wonder Years Incubus vs. Bad Religion
I usually lean on after shows as a way to relieve "schedule stress." Haha. "Oh, I'm seeing this band at an after show? Okay, cool. I can see somebody else during the day."
