Had this same thought today when I saw this! ... And Rusty returns to the thread! Haha. Welcome back. For a myriad of reasons, I would assumed MGK is playing Lollapalooza too. But how else do we explain the blanked out date between several other midwest dates that falls on Riot Fest weekend (the date before is 9/17 and the date after is 9/21)? There's two dates in that window, actually. I'd love to be wrong, but all signs point to Riot Fest (including the fact that he's playing other "rock" festivals this year).
Fair points, totally. I believe previous lineups for riot fest actually had the number of ???? match the letters in the band/artist. If that stays true, MGK does NOT work for the headliner. My favorite band, Nine Inch Nails, DOES! haha.
I feel like we debate the question marks every year. Hah. I took a look back at the 2015 poster and those definitely didn't map on to the bands that were added. The word count did add up to Weezer on two of the posters (but weirdly, the number of question marks didn't map onto the album play on that one). But both SOAD and the Prodigy weren't represented by question marks in a way that lined up with their names. The question marks definitely didn't line-up with the additions in 2016. 2017 didn't have any. And neither did 2019. In 2018, there was only one set of ???? for the third headliner. And knowing what we know now? The # of question marks does line-up with Bauhaus. So there's that. Realistically, it seems to waver based on how crowded the poster is. Which makes sense that they'd just fill the gaps with however many question marks it takes to make it look good. Based on the new poster design though, where they've started to stack words on, it would be strange to have "Death Cab For Cutie" take up 50% of that third line given that all of the other longer names are stacked (including headliners). Based on the new format, it would probably be more like "Death Cab" on one line and "For Cutie" on another. IMHO, that third line is probably going to have at least two more names added to it. That being said: I'd love for any/all of the bands you put forward to be added (especially NIN)! Haha. Given the number of acts we usually get with the full line-up and what is currently represented on the poster... I would think we get quite a bit more than 13 more bands. Even if the line-up is significantly reduced, we're probably going to get quite a few more than that. At least that's what I'm hoping for. Because as much as this line-up is serviceable, it definitely lacks the "oomph" factor that most of the others have had.
The first set of ?’s is one letter too long for Operation Ivy Unless they’re billed as “Operation Ivy!” “Fugazi Reunion” would fit lol
From the little clues I could gather.. nothing remotely official!, I think Lolla is being planned for late August.. if it even happens, I think they may be waiting to see what the home schedule for the Bears is with Grant Park being so close to Soldier Field
Death Cab would be on the second line. They’re way too big of a name even if they aren’t at the height of their popularity. They still sell out shows regularly in Chicago.
Yes. They aren’t moving. Every weekend in September is booked with other festivals and they aren’t moving to October. I’m almost positive it’s a happen the current dates or not happen at all situation. (and they aren’t moving to another weekend in August, Grant Park is booked two of those weekends I believe)
For sure. In 2016, they were fifth billed. Below Ween and above Rob Zombie. On the current poster, I think they would probably be just below or above the Pixies (they are inarguably bigger than them, but from a "legacy band/rare get" perspective, the Pixies have more clout).
That would be such a bummer for me, haha. But yeah. I could see them on it too given that they have fall tour plans. Honestly, I think any punk/emo/whatever band with "fall touring plans" is potentially in the mix. Related (in terms of being a potential act): The Juliana Theory has hinted that they have some dates to announce soon.
1 am drunken thoughts maybe, but Hayley Williams has been openly talking about Paramore a lot lately, what are everyone’s thoughts about them being a possibility?
I love DKM but I have been pretty over it the last few times I have seen them. If they did an old album play or something though, then I would entirely change my tune.
2:30 am drunken thoughts… Hit The Lights have made a mostly annual pilgrimage to Four Chord Fest in Pittsburgh every year (no recent update on that). Joywave is already booked, Kevin plays bass for them & plays guitar in Hit The Lights. I don’t think it’s likely for Hit the Lights to play, but it’s not zero percent either
It would be cool to have them again, in 2017 it was a cool set and I camped there the whole day, but Im really hoping for Hayley to tour with her solo stuff before a Paramore tour
They've moved ????? in lineups once announce before, right? Like line 4 moves to line 2? I doubt #1 moves but IIRC The headliners did swap around in 2018.
You all are changing my mind about MGK haha. I'm now wondering if Lollapalooza does indeed happen, will it even be four days?
I think so. Perry Ferrell has made two videos saying he hopes/can’t wait to see everyone in Grant Park this summer (it was basically a video with him and his wife promoting getting vaccinated) so it seems like they are optimistic it happens the regular dates as planned.
I could definitely see Hit the Lights on the second stage as a late afternoon/early evening act. The last few years they've had some "smaller--but big for smaller--bands who don't tour very often" sets on that stage. That's a crap description of what I mean, haha. But you probably get it. Yeah, all signs point to Lolla happening. I also doubt they'll reduce the number of days, stages, or number of bands by too much. From what we've seen of other festival announcements it looks like they are all sticking to the norm in terms of size.
