I am seriously doubting No Doubt plays again. If Gwen hadn't said anything about the band being done so recently, I'd be back in but... It just feels so unlikely given that stance. And Gwen isn't exactly hurting for money so that's not much of a motivator.

Operation Ivy has felt like a possibility every year the past few years, and I would imagine that check's gonna be big but nowhere near as big as MCR. If they don't book them it's not a financial thing, it's because they still don't want to do it. Who knows what impact the pandemic may have had on that stance for all the band members, though...

    What now?

I'm not high on it, but I could see a one off No Doubt Tragic Kingdom album play show.. Blake Shelton did an interview complaining all Gwen listens to is ska, I don't think that drummer threw that dart out about a reunion for nothing, maybe she'd do it just to see Fishbone, Hepcat, and maybe a Jimmy Cliff.

Operation Ivy.. I've always heard they never felt right doing a reunion show/tour bc Op Ivy wasn't meant to play in front of a huge crowd, well the world almost ended fellas, throw us a bone.

Also a band people are forgetting when talking about likely headliners is Bright Eyes. If you remember their tour that was to be last year had no Chicago date when originally announced, which screamed they were playing a festival here. They weren’t on the Pitchfork lineup and would get the headlining bump at Riot, so they seem likely.

Jello isn’t too stubborn, he doesn’t want to play with the pieces of shit that still trot that band around against all the ethos of what they were. Rest of the band straight up suck.

I was on that train last year when that tweet was in place. But I doubt that band would practice an album like that for a single show. That feels more like a full-blown tour and/or a handful of festival dates. Not a single date in the middle of a pandemic, though.

The OpIvy thing always felt like a "waiting on Jesse Michaels" kinda thing to me. It's still in the "highly unlikely" category for me, but then Jawbreaker and the Misfits happened... Everyone is on good terms and the money is there. I think it's just the right confluence of things (that may or may not ever come to be). The pandemic changes things in a multitude of ways.

And I do think that if it does happen? It'll be similar to what Jawbreaker did. A single date at Riot Fest followed by a major market U.S. tour the next year if things feel riot.

Bright Eyes is big, but I really don't think they're "night closing" big. They would close out their stage but the headlining acts are either at least hockey arena level popular or it's some sort of special circumstance/a super rare performance/a reunion.

I could see them being added. But definitely not as a top three. They'd be somewhere on that second line, though. But I guess if it were meant to be a final tour and it was their only tour date of 2021 that could change things maybe.

So. Whatever year it was that the Cure and the National headlined nights of Riot Fest, the poster initially said "Marky Ramone with the Bouncing Souls." Then it got removed. A few years after that is when the Marky Ramone/AWK thing went down.

On their Patreon podcast 1-2 months back, the Souls had C.J. Ramone on as a guest and told the story about how they got fired by him. They had been hired to be his backing band, and I guess Marky didn't like the way Brian and Pete were playing and standing on-stage. So he fired them.

It kinda makes sense. The whole vibe of the Souls is loose. They sound perfectly tight on-stage when they're playing, but Brian is always making goofy faces and gyrating his neck. Pete's upper-body moves like one of those weird carwash inflatable dance things... Marky wanted his backing band to be stiff like the Ramones. And that's not the Bouncing Souls.

    2014

Andrew WK played with Marky's Blitzkrieg after Michale Graves left as lead.. Marky had 2 or 3 other guys including Ken Stringfellow of the Posies sing lead and some dude from a German Ramones tribute band (had to do some google research), but Andrew WK would be the most fun... because as you know, We Want Fun

    Damn that’s rough. Haha

Jesse Michaels has made surprise appearances at Rancid shows multiple times throughout the years to play an OpIv song or two. At this point, who knows what’s stopping them from doing a reunion gig

Just looked at the Thursday Preview Party post on the RF site again. It says that one of the bands will be a Thursday exclusive. Which means that the rest of the Thursday line-up will be somewhere on that poster. But I'm guessing it'll be special sets for at least some of them.

I'm always a big fan of this sort of thing. It means I can stress less about conflicts the rest of the weekend. Like, if Saves the Day winds up playing a Through Being Cool set on Thursday I'll probably be way more chill about them conflicting with anybody else at the festival proper.

Like that one year at Wrecking Ball: I didn't stress about seeing Piebald's 45 minute set at the fest because I had an after show ticket to see them.

Yeah, hah! The Souls all handled it with a sense of humor talking about it. CJ's response basically implied that Marky was a fair, but difficult person to work with who takes the band's legacy incredibly seriously - including the on-stage image/persona.

I know, right?! I honestly think it's just concern about the band's legacy, playing a huge venue, etc. TBH, ya' gotta give it to 'em. They've held off pretty long because you know offers have gone out to them at least once or twice. I admire it.

After Jawbreaker did their thing, I secretly wondered if somebody from that camp might reach out and see how performing there felt. Jawbreaker holds a similar place in the punk rock canon in terms of being a legendary band who hasn't been seen live for the majority of their fans.

My stance on the whole thing is: Make the money when you can! So long as everybody in the band is still passionate about it and the festival you're playing aligns with your principles, do it up. I fully understand why Minor Threat and Fugazi won't ever do it, and I'm kinda grateful for that because both bands really would sound weird in a headlining slot at a festival like Riot.

But I can hear the crowd erupt in my head when I think about Operation Ivy opening a set with "Knowledge" and the crowd going ape shit on that first "It's looking fucking narrow." So I kinda hope it happens at some point, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'd put the Dropkicks as a possibility. But dear god, I hope not. "Here's another hour set full of songs from our last three albums, a random classic rock cover, and 'Shipping Up To Boston.'"

I've never seen a band completely ignore an entire back-catalog and be so successful at it in a festival setting.

They'll troll us and spend 10 minutes bringing people from the crowd to play the instruments for "Knowledge" like Green Day has done for the past 20 years

Craig had posted he is playing two festivals, one in Chicago and one in Virginia. Chiodos played the Chicago one previously.

The first two shows will be in Michigan, and a tour around the other dates.

Yeah, for some reason I just don’t enjoy DKM like I used to. I’d probably skip their set completely.

That’s weird about their set though. I’ve only seen them once, which was fall 2014, and they were pretty good about mixing up the setlist. But that WAS 7 years ago...

Fun show, but I’d skip them (shrug emoji)

Too Many Zooz is touring with Big Freedia around Riot, I expect them on the lineup.. I've watched a few of their videos on youtube, it's something different

Saw them in a festival in 2019, the crowd was small but it was a fun dance party.

For me, it's because most of the new albums have been lackluster. There's a song or two here or there that are fine but... The setlist just feel stale. And there's plenty of bands with a discography as deep as theirs who keep it interesting, manage to work in some deep cuts, etc. As a band, they just aren't for me anymore.

I could see Danzig being added. They’re doing festivals in Wisconsin and Nevada in July-August.

Osees (fka Thee Oh Sees) are playing Thalia Hall the Friday & Saturday of Riot Fest weekend

Dirty Heads are listed as playing Friday on Pollstar, so safely assume Sublime with Roam is too

Chris Stapleton just added a July show at Wrigley, I think the HellaMega Tour cancel rumors may need to slow down (I think some dates may be moved/cancelled, and the Canada shows may get cancelled.. but I fully expect that August Wrigley show to happen on the day it's scheduled)
