I don't know that it was ever confirmed, but I think it was No Doubt's drummer who hinted at some 20 year Tragic Kingdom stuff happening.
Buttrock festivals don't give a shit, to be honest. Same goes for Attila but I feel like that got lost in the shuffle.
Catching up on this thread - I know it's just speculation, but y'all are really postulating Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Neutral Milk Hotel could play Riot? Heh.
To be fair, I don't think anybody is thinking (realistically, at least) that any of those artists might be in the mix to play. But especially not Mudvayne. Hah. I do stand by my statement about Slipknot being the last remaining "bigger" nu-metal act who hasn't played that could possibly play someday. But even still, I find it incredibly unlikely. I'm just glad we didn't have to have the "Limp Bizkit isn't a good for Riot Fest" talk this year.
What do we think about the placement and number of “????” on the new poster? There’s 13 on the poster, with “many more” written below. 1 of the 13 is listed below the last named band (Chubby and the gang). Do we really believe they only are adding 12 bands bigger than Chubby and The Gang? Or do you guys assume some of those “other bands” at the bottom will fill in spots not currently occupying a “????” on the poster?
yea really curious to see if we still get the usual ~90ish bands or if they are going to trim it a bit this year.. they could easily get away with 10-12 less bands just by dropping 1 or 2 from rebel/rise/radical and giving all the earlier bands longer sets. not that i want them to do that, but just thinking if money is tight, thats a route they could go down, especially if they also have to book extra bands for a 4th day.
The question marks almost never map onto where artists fall on the line-up with Riot Fest. It's a loose indicator, but I don't think it maps directly. And certainly the number of question marks almost never equate to the number of words in an artist's name. That's thrown off even more given the new poster format with artist names being double up (e.g., "Run The" being over "Jewels," "Circa" being over "Survive," etc). That question mark slot after NFG could easily be three separate acts based on the spacing. However, looking at where some of the question marks are this year? It's right where the two open headlining slots would be. There's also questions marks where Jawbox, All-American Rejects, and Toots were. But it would be really odd for Riot to run out and book artists that would fit that exact same slot. I just think it's a loose indicator as to where it's going to fall. So we'll probably wind up with the two new headliners, 3-4 new sub-headliners (maybe a stage closer or two), and a bunch of artists throughout the rest of the day. No idea if they'll be shrinking the line-up size this year or not, but if any festival could cobble together a full line-up on a smaller budget? It's Riot Fest. That's where having your roots in punk/hardcore could really help... I would imagine that if we get fewer artists, they'll extend the set times. But I'm honestly not sure if it would be for the mid-day acts or for the headliners.
I don't think the ?? mean much of anything because there's still a lot of spots to fill even if it's a smaller lineup than usual (I still think they will have the 5 stages) We know Dinosaur Jr is like 95% definite, and none of the ??'s really match them There's 44 bands currently listed on the poster, I'd have to think another 20-30 bands at least have to be added, plus the Thursday night thing *46 if you include Andrew WK & Gwar (I think Bosstones, Naked Raygun, Offspring, ETID & Nofx are the closest other bands to locks)
another fun act for Thursday would be Andrew WK doing lead vocals for Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg... they played a few shows together several years back, and it looked pretty fucking cool from the youtube videos I saw
People are also starting to assume that the line-up will be smaller. And we don't really know. It could be 20-30 more bands, could be another 40. I'm done pretending that I have any idea how the fuck cash flow works on a good year, let alone during a pandemic... Like, how much money (if any) is "left" because they bumped out MCR to last year? That sort of thing. I have no idea how any of that works which I'm sure will have a decent impact on what's available. It was interesting (and heartening) to learn that Riot remained fully staffed throughout the pandemic, though... They also may just book a deliberately smaller line-up this year to minimize risk. Fun fact about that: It was originally meant to be the Bouncing Souls, but he fired them after two practices.
Last Riot had 88 artists or so on the bill, so I fucked up in my math.. but no other fests in the Fall look to be downscaling.. so including Thursday, based on how everything has fallen it should be over 50 more bands
I definitely think Blink not playing Inkcarceration increases the odds of us getting Bad Religion and Alkaline Trio at Riot, just based on the fact that they're trying to make that tour happen again in some capacity. And I'd be all about Alk3 doing a FHTI album play! I'm starting to get excited about wave 2 having more in the way of punk rock bands given the number of names coming up as possibilities that feel pretty likely (the Offspring, NOFX, Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio, the Lawrence Arms). Honestly, among all of those, they'd all make me super happy but... I'd be totally cool if all we got was Bad Religion and the Lawrence Arms.
Makes sense. Will they be announcing the Thursday night billing yet, though? I thought that was going to be a surprise, or at the very least, something they announced later/much closer to the festival. Maybe even around the time they announce aftershows.
