Cobra Skulls and The Exploited are good adds imo. I like The Exploited in that legacy slot like GBH last year. And Cobra Skulls is a band I haven't heard from in a really long time so that one is interesting to me as well.

Cobra Skulls have been broken up. I had thought about going out to Punk Rock Bowling mostly to see them because I wasn't sure that enough people would care about them reuniting to make Riot Fest book them. I have my fingers crossed, but will try not to get my hopes up. They were one of my favorite bands that formed post-2000 though, so they would be a huge add for me even if they probably would only be on a side stage early on.

I could definitely do without the Exploited... I would much prefer somebody like Youth Brigade in that slot.

Cobra Skulls would be a pretty big deal for me too! And I'm honestly surprised they weren't on the first wave of Fest announcements this year. I feel the same way about "enough people caring" for Riot Fest to book them, though so we'll see... Might have something to do with Riot Fest's relationship with Red Scare too.

Youth Brigade would have been really cool, I agree. The Exploited is not my favorite band by any means, but I do enjoy the street punk/d-beat side of things, so I like that bands like them and GBH are still getting some representation in 2018.

Johnny Marr's tour poster has Riot Fest listed on September 16th. It's always the older acts who drop the ball...

Really cool addition, though! Where exactly will he be on the bill? Somewhere in a 3-5pm slot maybe? Just looking at some of the venues he's playing on that tour it's not seeming like he'll be a massive draw.

It's cool that they're still representing that genre/style -- I'd just prefer it if it were a different genre being used to represent the "old school" or whatever, haha. Just not my thing.

That's fair if it's not your thing. Definitely not for everyone, that is for sure.

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

Hell (as I'm pretty sure I've stated previously in this thread), I'd love for Riot Fest to go a step further than making overtures to the hardcore and d-beat scene and book some newer acts from the scene as opposed to just booking the old-school acts like The Exploited and GBH to fill those slots. I doubt that'll happen since those acts are less marketable than the old guard, but it'd be nice.

Bands I think will play for real:

    Green Day
    Op Ivy
    Lamb of God
    Jimmy Eat World
    Chevelle

In general, I think it would be nice for both Riot Fest and Rock Fest to book some younger acts across genres. Riot Fest isn't quite as guilty of it as Rock Fest is, but... Sometimes I look at the line-up and there's just a lack of "new" faces.

One thing I wish Riot Fest would do is take that smaller stage and add a second one beside it so they can have more "developing" artists on the bill and have it operate pretty much the same way the main stages are (one plays while the other sets up).

I'm hoping for (but not expecting) Green Day. If nothing else, though, I bet we'll get the Longshot. And Riot Fest has a history of booking side projects or solo acts, and then bringing on the bigger act down the line. So that would bode well for Green Day in the future.

I do know that Jawbreaker's stage manager last year was somebody associated with the Green Day camp, and Jawbreaker had a positive experience. But that probably doesn't mean anything, haha.

I've simmered down on the Operation Ivy thing, as that was solely based on one Instagram story from one person... It would be cool as hell, but I'm not expecting it at this point...

Yeah, as much as I would love an Op Ivy reunion, that is definitely one that I won't ever get my hopes up for until it is actually announced.

As to Green Day, I have seen people count them out because they aren't really playing a lot of shows right now. But I feel like Riot Fest loves bringing in headliners that aren't doing a full tour, so I don't think that makes them any less likely than if there were playing other shows. But I have been guessing that they would headline for years, so who knows.

Johnny Marr has never had a huge draw by himself. He's played the Metro here in Chicago before and sold it out but I don't think he'd go any larger. I'd expect mid-afternoon. Definitely not a set to miss, either. I much prefer him over Morrissey, too.

Everything I've read about Operation Ivy from Jesse Michaels over the years has never been a hard "no," in the same way most people who say no say no. It's never a "fuck those guys, and fuck that band and fuck those songs!" It's more of a "Eh, do we really want to do that again? Do we need to? I dunno, man... Seems complicated."

I've read people saying Jesse has said it's never going to happen, but I've never actually been able to confirm that in any print interviews.

For me, the fact that Green Day isn't touring this year makes them more likely. Riot Fest's typical M.O. is to grab a band like that when they're off-cycle. But like you, I've been anticipating it for years... I felt for sure they were going to be there the year Revolution Radio came out (granted, the appearance would have been announced well before the album).

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

I could imagine Johnny Marr getting a good draw at Riot Fest. I figure a lot of the crowd would be just “oh man he was in The Smiths, he’s a legend, I have to check him out!” type people.

Also, as for Green Day, I think Green Day has become far too popular to play Riot Fest. I mean, maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my take onsidering the fact they played Wrigley Field and the Rose Bowl last year.

Although, Green Day does have a HUGE devoted fanbase, so if they actually did play, Riot Fest would sell a lot of single-Day tickets for sure.

Could potentially have both, other bands have had multiple projects play over the festival

I don't think anybody's saying Green Day is a "definitely might happen" so much as a "maaaaybe if we're really lucky." I do definitely think it makes them more likely to pop-up at Riot Fest given that they're off-cycle... But that doesn't mean it's a possibility. If that makes sense.

I'd say the Longshot are a pretty sure thing, though.

I assumed this with their couple of dates at HOB Chicago in June or July (forget which month).

Social Distortion was originally doing a Friday and Saturday in June, but have since added a third Sunday show. I would not think they would return so soon for Riot.

The Distillers are announcing a September tour sometime in the near-future. I think it's safe to call them a lock.
